Muto shape, not substance

I have been going over MuTe effects because I wanted to turn a ring into a hauberk (as a way of putting on armor quickly).

All the spell guidelines I read are focused on changing the substance, it seems, rather than the form of an item.

Would the following work:

Base: 4 (change dirt in a highly unnatural way) + 1 touch, +2 sun
MuTe15

turns a steel ring into a chainmal shirt

I'm assuming that the ring is made of steel as well? How large is it?

Assuming it's a small ring (worn on one's finger) that is made of steel (the same material than the hauberk), then there is still another aspect besides the change of shape that must be taken into account, and that is the change in volume.

We can see that Base 4 also covers the size of an object, as demonstrated by the canon spell Object of Increased Size (Base 4 Make something grow to eight times its previous volume). Assumably, and hauberk is much larger than 8 times the volume of a finger ring, so there may be a problem there that requires at least an additional magnitude.

So it would seem to me that the spell is:

  1. Changing the object's shape (Base 4)
  2. Changing the object's volume (Base 4) more that eightfold (+1 magnitude).

To me, that would point out that this may need to be Base 4 (Make something grow to eight times its previous volume), +1 for additional growth, +1 changing its shape as well. So you'd end up with MuTe 25.
