I'm creating a familiar for a character I'm playing, and it's a pine marten. I'm trying to find what kind of magic powers this animal will have, but I can't seem to find any myths about it? A close relative to the pine martin is the sable, which was (and still is, sadly) prized for it's fur.
Any ideas for powers or sources I should look up? It has a Might of 14.
Yes, I made him up as a Companion character, acutally. I added a magical power I called Leap of the Woodland Prowler, which was a simple ReAn15 (jump 50 paces). I would also have liked a power that makes him climb any solid surface for Duration: Conc, but I can't find out how to do it using the Guidelines.
The only (vaguely) medieval info I have on the pine marten is that it was called a 'sweetmart', in contrast to the 'foulmart', or polecat (and as the owner of male ferrets, I can attest to their - albeit occasional - stink!). The Marten admits to the kinship and friendship to Reynard the Fox during his trial before King Noble - and the Roman de Reynard was very popular in the C13.
Sorry that this is not much help. On the plus side, you can give it whatever powers you like! From observing pine martens in the wild, I'd suggest that they are particularly good climbers and hunters; I'd certainly give it Perfect Balance and Puissant Athletics.
The smell of male ferrets can be legendary at times. I have two myself (and one female, which is 1/3 the size of the males).
I made up two powers for the Marten after seeing their jumping and climbing skills. This "Marten of Virtue" will have "Leap of the Woodland Prowler" (ReAn15, makes him jump 50 paces, as mentioned) and "Sure Grip and Strong Claw" which I figured would be a ReAn10 with Concentration. It's suppsoed to let him climb any solid surface for the duration.
