oath-swearing : 10 points cost, why?

Hi,

In RoP M p39, oath-swearing is a ritual power (25 level) non hermetic equivalent. I checked “grant major virtue” which is a 2x ritual power example power, and it clearly says “ritual power x2”

Then it’s described as costing 10 points.

But the cost of ritual power is “magnitude”. So it is 5 points. Why is it +5 points, and if it’s because the author intended to add a “reduced power” 5 intricacy point to raise cost, why, and why is it not said. Also for a power which needs to penetrate MR, raising the cost is not very useful.

(Also the initiative of the power is correct compared to its “one major virtue ritual power" nature so I’m quite in the “it’s a mistake of the cost” team, rather than in the “it’s mistake of the number of virtue required to have” team)

I also checked the errata, just in case, but nothing found.

If someone has any information about it, i’m interested.

Greetings,

Because there’s “No Hermetic equivalent”, is my guess. I don’t know whether the 10 point cost is based on something (I’ve read like 8 of the books so far, including RoP:M) or an arbitrary number, but most powers in the book are built as Hermetic effects with Hermetic arts.

It probably needs to be errata’d to match “Ritual Power ×2” like Grant (Major Virtue). Mechanically it’s effectively granting a Minor Flaw that’s conditional and has the added benefit that Might points spent on it regenerate normally. That latter bit is at least worth the bump up to 10 magnitudes of effect.

The Binding Oath power in RoP: F is also 10 magnitudes of effect, but it’s ultimately not quite the same as the Oath-Binding in RoP: M. Nonetheless, similar enough that non-Hermetic level 50 equivalent seems correct.

Good catch! Since the errata list is no longer maintained, I added the issue to the list here: Errata - Project: Redcap.
