Table Talk: Introductions / Character Creation

I don't know if you are aware of this site but it's a great way to create a character portrait. They used to charge for it but it looks like it is now free again

Lol I advised it on madmax saga

Welcome Ginolard.

Good news guys, I got a call from the gameshop and my books are in!
I'll pick them up tomorrow and get more info on the covenant posted by the weekend.

The characters are looking good. I like what I see so far. You still have some time to work on them. I have books to read and many posts to write before we get started, hopefully that won't take too long.

Phew, thank Goodness for that. I've started to flesh out my guy with scores now. Just need to work on the abilities and spells for him plus the abilities for his Ghostly Warder.

I'm away this weekend but will go round and see BoXer one evening next week and we'll thrash it out together.

Suffice to say, Amaury El Maganza (yes, he has a name now) is coming. Whilst you wait, enjoy this picture of him

Whoops.

That was meant to be a URL

I plan to take the Ghostly Warder virtue but am a little unclear on how you generate the Magic Might total and how to determine what Powers it will have.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

Another rules question (I'm not a rules lawyer honest! I just don't understand a lot of them).

Affinity with Art states that during character creation any XP you put into that Art are increased by 1/2.

So, I'll be taking Skilled Parens and Affinity with Creo. That gives me a base of 300 XP right?

Assuming I take this:-

Intellego - 10
Muto - 4

Corpus - 7
Imaginem - 2
Mentem - 10
Vim - 10

Am I right in saying that I would be left with 94 points but with Affinity with Art (Creo) I could put 141 into Creo??? Have I understood this correctly?

Well, I've just re-read the "Darius" example on page 32 on the main rulebook and it clearly states there that "He has 65 XP left, he puts 37 into Perdo which his affinity turns into 55 points giving him Perdo 10".

Wow.

I think my Creo score just went through the roof

Can we create companions too? I've a very cool female thief type companion from 4th edition that I'd love to bring over. I had more fun playing her than I did my flambeau mage!

Almost done there.
It was very hard to designate a somewhat proficient Storm Master (Air magus), so I had to take the long way, but I'm rather ok with how this is turning out.

Yup me too. Just need to pop over and see BoXer this week to work out which spells I'd like and then I'm done.

I am still not really sure how he's going to work out campaign wise. It'll be interesting to see what you all think

My apologies for the delay. The last 2 weeks has been very busy for me in RL.

To answer Ginolard's question...yes each of you may create as many companions as you like. As the rule book suggests please create a background relationship with another player's magus, not your own.

I like all the character ideas so far. This looks like it could turn into a very interesting saga.

I have 2 comments regarding the saga. First, my style of GM/DM/SG 'ing is character centered. So don't worry too much about how your character will fit in. Design the characters you want to play and I'll bend the story to fit them. Second, as many of you know I'm new to 5th edition rules. The last time I played ArM 2nd edition was new. So please speak up if you see a mistake being made.

Well back to writing. I'll do my best to get the covenant and saga background posted tonight.

We have a new player, who should be posting here shortly.

Welcome Ronni.

Hey there

I am the notorious new player

I am from Denmark, and am the storyteller on a 5th ed. saga.

Now...I was thinking of making a maga, who could develop to be "The consummate politician"...lots of intrigue ability, with spells to match.

Any ideas in other directions?

Ohh and if someone owns Societates, could he/she please write a pm to me about the Jerbiton virtues and flaws

Thank you!

Welcome ROF!

Well, when there were only 5 magi, we were heading in a direction that mirrored the Pythagorean 5 elements with Doctor J representing Water (his Grailesque Lady of the Lake), Max representing Fire (no surprise what House we're talking about there  ), Gino representing Spirit/Mind with his pacifist hippie Criamon, Fixer representing Air with his Storm Lord (still under construction) and my magus representing Earth (still very under construction).

With a 6th magus that idea sort of falls apart, but no big deal. There can certainly be enough scope to allow for other concepts such as the one you have already summarised.

The only thing that makes me laugh with a degree of frustration is the seeming opposition of the Fates against every idea I seem to grasp onto for how I want to design my magus. Certainly you could not have known when you designed your character background, but the running joke (frustration) is this:

I first thought to myself, hmm maybe Ill make some sort of Merlinesque character, then Doctor J came up with a Lady of the Lake with enemies "Heirs of Merlin" lol.

Okay I say to myself, I'll do something in a more druidic vein and maybe resurrect a Diedne. Then I see Max's Flambeau posted and "CRASH" another idea straight into a brick wall.

Then I wrack my brains and start to get an idea that might incorporate some sort of feral upbringing and lo and behold you post a concept of Jerbiton elite snobbery lol. AAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRGH!!

The Fates are aligned against me! LOL

Well my pardons Boxer hehe...

...but maybe there is your answer...Use the Nornes and Moiras and create a magus, who deals with Fate

Remind me where i would find those write ups?

"Oh great my", mind says, "more material to consider adding to this unappetizing mental stew" LOL!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norn

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moirae

There you go

Ohhh but there isnt any such write up in the Ars books for those lineages. Gotcha. Well thanks Ill give them a read for more inspiration but I suspect it will just be flavour for my Earth magus type, if anything.

Being inventive is sure a drain on the old noggin lol.
