Table talk: OOC

It could be worse. I could call you Marque or Marq.

Given a few years, the covenant could end up with a thriving glassworks as a source of income since Katja is very good at training people. With a single student, I think she is +16 source quality (ability 2 in 1 season, 3 after 2nd and 5 by the 5th).

The stone sled
R: Touch D: Sun T: Ind
Enchants a block or piece of stone, large enough to bear the caster and several chests of supplies or a couple other people, to carry her along at her mental direction. The stone moves with a speed, direction, and height above the ground that he decides (maximum speed as of a galloping horse, maximum height of 10 paces above the ground). The stone can only maneuver across terrain that can support it, and so cannot cross water or crevasses without sinking unless they are no more than 10 paces deep. If the stone does not have sides or frame for support and the caster directs the stone to maneuver rapidly, he may be forced to make a Dexterity + Agility roll or fall from the stone.

Based on The Stone Palanquin from Ars Magica Wiki with increased size

(Base 3, +2 Voice, +3 Moon, +1 size)

History:

Katja was born to a family of glassworkers. Her grandfather had moved to Szczecin to settle around St. Jacob's Church to work on the glasswork for the church. He brought with him his wife, and grown sons and their wives and set up a glassworks. The family prospered despite number changes of sovereignty.

Katja learned to work and blow glass with her brothers and cousins while growing up. As wealthier craftmen able to make valuable goods, she had a privileged life. She had a real talent for blowing larger bubbles to cut and laydown for silvering to make mirrors. Little did she know that her affinity for the sands and glass was in part a waking gift. One day, a mage came into the shop to purchase goods his covenant and seeing her work and how glass almost perfectly fit, checked for a gift. He immediately arranged to apprentice the 12 year old girl paying her family off.

This lead to her being taken to Fengheld initially but at the end of her first year, a mage at durenmar claimed her from her tremere master as the affinity and natural inclinations towards glass fit his current project and needs. She spent time at Durenmar training hard and insuring her paren's lab was in top shape. She learned the variant of spells to create stone wall and to transport a person past it as a way to protect and enter/leave her mater's lab in her later years of apprenticeship.

Eventually she passed her gauntlet and glasswork paid for continued study at Durenmar's library but she wanted a lab or her own so she has been watching for an opportunity. Thanks to her control of rego and perdo she found a large strone rock and then used perdo to carve a seat and storage area so she had a way to move when the time came.

I can't see any problems and we finally have a magus less competent in a fist fight then Mariella . SOmething I thought unlikely.

A glassworks for income might be useful as our covenant is slowly going broke

Well assuming the greedy flaw doesn,t kick in and the apprentices don't have to kick back a large enough sum to the maga's own personal fortune

I've made a few changes after reading the constructive suggestions and criticisms and I'm pretty satisifed with the below. If this suits Marko, I'll work out the next 5 years post apprenticeship. Basically, I changed the background and a few flaws around. The character is seen by many as either a beast, monster, or engine of war rather than a magus or a man. As such, he has grown almost to accept the fate given to him by others.

Appearance: Regius stands shy of 8 feet tall and almost 400 lbs of muscle. A scar runs down his face and much of his torso bears the marks of countless battles. His dark black hair is a wild and unkept that he occasionally cuts unceremoniously with the blade of a dagger when it grows too long as to impede his vision. His eyes are a lifeless grey that burst into life when possessed by an almost insatiable bloodlust during the heat of battle.

Over his broad shoulders is a bear pelt worn like a cloak. The bear's lifeless head slung over his left shoulder, with the left paws framing his red tabard. In turn, the tabard is worn over dull grey chain mail and tied firmly around his waist with a heavy leather belt. The sigil of House Flambeau engraved on its buckle. His clothing is tattered and jagged along the edges from years of travel and combat.

He carries himself with a solemn, almost brooding posture with a great sword non-chalantly rested on his left shoulder. In battle, he becomes more beast than man as he is prone to cackle maniacally while he fights with reckless abandon in the thrill of the fight.

Background: A little over 25 years ago, a promising young apprentice successfully completed her gauntlet. What distinguished this apprentice among others was that the blood of [insert mythic bloodline] flowed strongly in her veins. It was the hope of the House that the apprentice would rise to become a great leader and hero for the future. The girl had been given to Archmagus Karandos in the hopes that the elder magus would unlock her full potential.

The girl, now a woman, called herself Carniola ex Flambeau and her home coven flourished. She was everything any Flambeau would ever ask for: beautiful, impetuous, daring and powerful. However, the adulation and praise leaped upon her also bore hubris and recklessness. Nevertheless, she joined one of the many covens that sprung up during the Reconquista; determined to prove her worth on her own merits.

When it was learned that a clan of giants wasplaguing the area near the coven, she and her sodales vowed to defeat the creatures and in the process acquire whatever magical and mundane riches they possessed. Their dreams of conquest were rapidly dashed as the giants were far more powerful than anticipated. Althouhg they slew all but the chieftain, a giant named Ragnus, only Carnional survived and she in turn was injured and dying. Ragnus was furious for the magi had destroyed his clan and killed his mate who was to bear him a son.

Out of spite, he took her near lifeless body and nursed her back to a semblance of health, only to proceed to impregnate her with his child. Were it not for her bloodline, she would not have survived the coupling. Ragnus promised her freedom once the child would be able to walk on its own. She had no choice but to comply for her injuries made escape impossible from the cave den where she was imprisonned.

Nine months later, after an excruciatingly painful labour, she bore a son of over 20 lbs. He grew rapidly off the milk of his mother whose breasts were ravaged from nursing the child. But Ragnus had no intention of keeping to his word. Six months after the birth, the giant forced himself upon her again and again until another child grew in her belly. Another 6 months passed and first son finally could walk. But she was already full with child and could barely stand no less flee.

The other magi of the Tribunal had not been entirely idle. They had been tracking down the fate of the missing expedition and came upon Ragnus while Carniola was only days away from childbirth. In the firefight, the child had wandered off. Unfortuantely, the stress of the battle had hastened the maga into labour. She and her second child succombed to the rigors of childbirth before any word of her first child was made.

And so, her first son lived on alone in the woods for approximately three and a half years. In his fifth year, he had grown to the size of a normal 10 year old. Stories began to circulate among the hunters of a strange boy that lived in the forests. Naturally, one of the local magi decided to investigate. What he found was beyond expectation. The magus captured the child and returned him to the coven where his lineage was verified. How the child had survived was a mystery. Were the faerie responsible or was it just the strength of his lineage that allowed him to live?

Whatever the answer, the Flambeau would not pass up a second chance. Having never known much human contact, training the boy would prove difficult to all but the most talented of teachers. They sent the boy to his mother's pater in hopes that he would some day live up to the expectations they once held in Carniola. The boy was a wild child and did not adapt well to living among humans. He could never escape the cold glares of the covenfolk who saw him as some sort of beast in man's body.

When he was 10, he had finally gotten a good enough grasp of latin to be assigned a tutor. Having noticed the child's inability or rather lack of talent in projecting his magical power outside of his body, Karandos felt the only path for the boy was the school of Ramius. He chose a grizzled warrior [insert marko's character name] to instruct the boy in sword play in hopes the rigorous training regimen would also beget discipline.

[insert marko's character name] was stunned to learn his pupil was only 10 years old when the child already stood shoulder to shoulder to squires preparing to earn their spurs. His amazement grew as the boy was tireless in training and fought savagely despite the odds. So he pushed and pushed to perfect his disciple's technique. Having never had any sons, at least known to him, [insert marko's character name] felt a sort of bond of fatherhood towards his charge as they spent long days and nights practicing. Nevertheless, he felt an unease. There was a disconcerting feral gleam in the boy's eyes. Not quite human, not quite beast, but a deadly killer in any respect.

These qualities did not entirely escape the Flambeau of the coven who saw potential as a tool for war. With the war against the Shadow Flambeau now in full swing, they saw an opportunity to use him in that capacity. The pater adopted his education style to reflect the weaknesses of the student. He secretly taught the boy how to enact the parma magica prior to his gauntlet. This may not have been uncommon at the time as there was growing fear among the magi of the Tribunal of the vulnerability of apprentices and custos outside the Aegis of the Hearth. The shadow Flambeau had already raided and destroyed many of the spring covens.

What he didn't expect was the speed at which his apprentice excelled at the ritual and rapidly surpassed many full-fledged magi. He also focused the studies on corpus as ignem and perdo would prove near useless to the apprentice in combat. However, Karandos never had the opportunity to complete the boy's training. His fight against Rasus left him in Twilight and he chose to retreat to the Cave of Twisting Shadows. Instead, he passed the apprentice down to one of his fili but continued to direct his advancement from afar.

This did not prove very fruitful for fostering his inclusion in the coven as his new pater saw him more as a burden than a true apprentice. He neglected to teach the boy magic theory and many other skills finding more success in simply cramming him with more and more parma as the boy excelled at it.

When time finally came for his gauntlet, Karandos felt the old spartan gauntlet would prove too easy for one that had survived the wilds up to the age of 5. Instead, he gave the boy a mission to find agents of the Shadow Flambeau and slay them. A small retinue of custos was assigned to assist him in this. What the archmagus got was far more than he bargained for. The apprentice returned several days later covered in a mask of crimson. He possessed a mad glimmer in his eyes now having taken the life of another man. Of his allies, there was no sign. After careful probing the magi were horrified to learn they had fallen at the newly gauntleted magus' hands as in the carnage of battle he fell sway to his bloodlust and slew both friend and foe indiscreminately.

Debate raged on among the magi on what to do about the apprentice. He had succeeded in his gauntlet but they held no love for him and could not allow him to remain. The magi agreed to induct him in House Flambeau, granting him the name of Regius Bestia as a veiled joke. Over the next few days, the magi remained divided on Regius' fate. In the end, he took the choice out of their hands and gathered up all his meager belongings and set off without a word.

When his disappearance was noticed, the magi of the coven had mixed feelings. There were those that were happy to be rid of him while others feared he had gone rogue. They sent out parties to find him. Fortunately it was [insert marko's character here] that found Regius first. He confronted his one time student on his departure. All the magus could answer was "I remember your story of an errant knight." [marko] understood what Regius meant and joked. "You're not much of a knight, boy. More a squire. Who ever heard of a squire-errant? I think you'll need a knight." And so the two have remained nearly inseperable ever since once [marko] explained the situation to the coven.

Greedy has nothing to do with money (that is avarice): greedy is linked to gluttony. If it wasn't for my small frame, my food bill might hurt the covenant.

As for fighting, where would a privileged daughter of a glass merchant or the apprentice of a bonisagus (bonisagus tradition) going to learn to fight? Girls aren't supposed to fight, that is why we have grogs and flambeau.

Well she isn't obese I think so it's not that bad yet. Now if my character had those flaws...

With warping, the bookworms and moths in Durenmar must be HUGE!!!

Of course she isn't obese, You have any idea how much effort blowing glass is? With the heat of the oven for heating the glass, the annealing oven and such to sweat off the pounds.

She is a little thing with a big appetite although obese instead of loose magic is tempting. It does fit with the slavic body type :).

I still haven't seen any comments on her character sheet from the ST's which is why it is not moved to character sheet thread.

I am not sure where in the Pomeranian forest we are. She wants to come to Ad Fons because it is so close to her family. THe close family ties mean that we have a place to sell glassworks through (and perhaps potions and one use glass magic items (glass globes that will glow for sun duration a certain number of times and usable as lamps after that). (as well as developing agencies and lots of plot complications for link to a glassblower clan.

Hmms, I had teaching formula. If I have 2 students, I have 16 source quality for glasswork, 19 for one student. 4 seasons, I can train someone to level 5 glasswork. (18 for teaching hermetic arts). My books are all quality 11 (+bonus if lower than highest level).

Now we just need to trade to get copy of Conjure the Mystic tower and vis to cast it to make more room (top floor is my lab, floor below my quarters, 2nd floor from top is glassworks), remaining 6 floors tbd)

I don't know what Slavic girls you have been encountering, but these svelt little Polish and Russian hotties, oh my! And the Chech girls, bad checks . Oh, and that one Serbian girl....

My past was a lot more fun than my present

(Speaking from looking at family photos, slavic women don't age gracefully from the very bad weather and harsh living conditions).

Well, I am thinking of Slavic women who have migrated over here to Chicago, which also has severe and harsh weather, but we have the very best food in the whole of the US (it all comes here before getting shipped elsewhere)
My ex (mother of my son) is a super hottie imported straight from Krackow.
And I am totally in love with this Russian philologist right here...
youtube.com/user/hotforwords

ONce you are happy with your characters and no one object then move to the character sheet page. I don't have the time to check and correct your character sheet. I get plenty of that sort of thing (not character sheets but mainly poor pieces of history to check and correct) at work. So just make the numbers right and once everyone is happy then post them in the character sheet section.

I've visited Chicago and Poland (where my parents came from). Trust me, I'd rather live in Chi-town.

LOL, there are more Polish people here in Chicago than in either Warsaw or Krackow. At least that is what they tell me, not sure how accurate it is. But there are a lot of Polish neighboorhoods with ethnic deli's and other types of stores catering to Polish tastes. And you know what I noticed? Older Polish women like to party hard core, and they can hold their own! Polish women are also highly fashion conscious as a sub culture. I don't know if it is that way in Poland, but the intensity of their fashion obsession seems to wane with successive generations until it levels out to the normal level of a typical americal teenage girl. Which is still pretty high, but there is a wide gap between the two magnitudes.

Mo mu Polposku?
I don't know if I said that right. I tried to ask if you speak Polish, but I think I actually said "I speak Polish?". I am uncertain.

Mariella is a flambeau she just considers hand to hand combat beneath her.

Carmen from Andorra is Flambeau. She never learned Martial Abilities because of the sexism that pervades Mythic Europe, but she did take Brawl and knows how to fight with a knife. Brawl is not uncommon for girls at all. Not in the least. Ever watch little children play? They wrestle and brawl a lot. Play fighting. A magus or maga who neglects to take a brawl score deserved the horrible death that awaits them. A Brawl score saved Octavian's life recently

Not every mage has to be able to fight magica threats and magical battles. A lot of stories can have the grogs defend you and as long as they do you are safe.

There is a place for non-combatant mages that have building skills, craft skills, folk ken and charm for dealing with merchants and nobles (gentle gift too).

Mages that can turn a large slab of rock (10 cubic paces or 270 square feet) into a wagon to transport goods.

Aboslutely , I never meant to imply otherwise.

Mariella (and most flambeau) was raised at a covenant by Flambeau magi so she has had every oppertunity to learn weapons and other combat skills. However a combination of her pride in her power as a magus and her physical build have combined to lead her to decide that hand to hand combat is beneath the dignity of a magus so she has not practiced it. It has nearly cost her , her life but better protective wards will solve that problem. Or bodyguards .

No, Marko specifically said otherwise.
