I'd like to release a project I am currently working on into the public. Ars Magica has lots of books and sometimes feels like a puzzle. We have compilations of spells, of spell guidelines, of virtues and flaws, even of all published magi with stat blocks. My goal is to do something similar for all magi mentioned in any of the books, but to go beyond that and add missing (from my perspective) information.
I want to piece everything together and fill in some blanks to get a mostly complete picture of a plausible version of the Order of Hermes. There will be one volume for every House. I try to document where information comes from and which parts were added by me. There are of course many other versions of the Order, but if you want just need to look up some piece information, then this series is for you.
The series is aimed at players who already know the game. I assume familiarity with the setting, especially the HoH series, and use terms without explaining them. It is supposed to be a concise compilation of information about a House, its members, and its covenants.
The goal I had in mind is that in order to "know" a House, you read the chapter from the relevant HoH book and then the volume of the Census to get an overview and pointers to other books.
It is also very much work in progress. I polished the three volumes sufficiently to be able to show them to other people, but they are certainly not in a final state. I tried not to let perfect be the enemy of done.
I welcome feedback as well as pieces information I've been missing, but I reserve the right to have a different opinion and a different vision of the project than others might have.
The current state can be found here: Ars Magica Census , and I'll update is whenever I find the time.
Is this limited to the 5e Cannon or are earlier editions included as well?
Edit: Nevermind, it is right there in the spread sheet.
Not sure where some of the covenants are detailed; first glance has several Loch Leagan Covenants I don't recognise; (Arch-Muein, Taigh Marsanta Loch Lomond and Whitenoch).
Not seeing the cut content Covenants (Labyrinth of Lanes & Shadow of the Moon) nor anything from Finnis Terrae.
There's a note in the spreadsheet that says they are from the Ascendancy of the Warp saga. It's not canon, but Lion of the North defines only three covenants and says there are many more. I decided to take six covenants from that saga, which still leaves some open.
I put Laybrinth of Lanes in Novgorod, because that one seemed a bit empty and Bjornaer are a good fit. I did not include Shadow of the Moon, because it's very specific.
Finis Terrae is great, but it's not canon, it's currently not freely avilable, it's not available in English, and they put too many magi in there for my taste. Yubal, the Chief Redcap of Iberia, is from FT, and I might include others in the future, but probably not all of them.
Thanks a lot for the encouragement, also to all visitors who had a look at the site. I am currently working on Bonisagus, Jerbiton, and Ex Misc, but I also have to prepare adventures to run and have been prioritising that. I'm always interested in comparing notes!
Thank you! This is excellent reference so far. I will definitely have use for it in my campaign. Looking forward to it rounding out with the rest of the Houses.
