The Joan Stories: an Ars Magica Novel

I have mentioned my Ars Magica novel-in-progress before, and the first third of the book has been available for about a year. But I’ve never given the project its own thread before, and this seemed a good time.

I’m very happy to announce that Part II of the book, covering the events from summer 1220 through spring 1221, is now available.

The Joan stories tell the tale of Joan of Flambeau, a newly- Gauntleted milites from the covenant of Castra Solis in Provençe, who goes south to Iberia to fight demons. She visits various covenants in Iberia, meeting many magi, mundanes, and the occasional historical figure. There are 11 chapters and a map of the Tremere covenant of Malva, and the story is 2/3rds complete. It’s at 57,000 words right now.

I’ll update this thread with any updates to the project.

You can find the Joan stories here: The Joan Vault - Google Drive

I read the first four chapters when I first saw you posted about it, good to know the story has continued.

Thank you so much for reading!

Great! I'm going to read both parts.

I'm really enjoying these! I look forward to part 3. Could the story of Darius of Flambeau be "novelized" such that footnotes would direct to rules sections governing that part of the story? In other words, expand the example in the rulebook into an actual story that instructs?

I can’t speak to Darius but I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed Joan’s stories!

Would it be possible to add the stats for Joan in a file - what she was/had at her Gauntlet and then what she learned/added over the course of the stories? I suspect you already have some idea of this, but might not want to be pinned down and constrain future stories. Thanks!

I do have this! As well as stats for various other characters and monsters, including Piero, aka “Archimedes filius Caesius,”; Hera the Dane; Romulus; the Roman mining ghosts, the Tartalo, and the Spectral Sahirs.

My hope is to collect all these and release them when the novel is complete, in about 5 more chapters.
