The Visitor (Spring 1235)

This may be a problem.
Riad has no idea where we are, save that we're near Barcelona... But he doesn't know where Barcelona is.
He went there as advised by the wizard Khalid Ibn Zayd Al-Kâtib, in search for worshippers of hermes, which where supposed to help him find Roberto, but he found the city through a mystical path.

All he can tell is that his people's island is northwest to Alexandria. He knows the place, though, so if near enough, he should be able to find it.

"Well, it seems we're off to Alexandria once more," Lucas says. "We'll have to play it by ear once we get there, I suppose. I'm afraid I don't know any divination magics that could help. Hopefully once we get close, you'll start to recognize the surroundings, Riad."

Acutus will swim next to the ship on the way to the island, he is not a fan of being on ship. He will ask during preparations, "Once the rest of you are infiltrating the city, would one of you be willing to bring my leather scale and spear with you? I can't carry them with me when I am a shark, and will be much more effective with them if I need to return to this form. Also, just to be clear, I am unable to speak when I am my other self, so some other means of communication may need to be devised."

(Also, Acutus has Area Lore: Mediterranean Sea (Legends) 2 if that helps with finding Riad's island. I'm at work so I can't get to Invisible Castle, so can someone roll for me? He aslo has a Confidence of 2, so he can spend 2 confidence points on the roll if it helps)

We can bring Acutus' gear along on ship. Roberto knows how to find the geographically corresponing ruins of the outer mundane layer of the regio. Sailing there (on surface) might be a good start.

Wirth frowns
Good point.
Sadly, I have yet to develop suitable spells. Anyone?

It's a tiny island, but this is the kind of thing that Aera Lore: Mediterranean Sea is well suited for. EF 12.
1d10=9 :open_mouth: + Int 3 + Area Lore 2 = 14.

You discuss with Riad about how his island and its surroundings looks like, and, after a while, you're pretty sure you've got an idea of where he's from. You never set foot on the island itself, but you've passed by it a couple of times, and should be able to find it without problem.

So, of we go.
I count:
Magi: Roberto, Wirth, Lucas, Acutus
Familiars: Cidito, Horus
Grogs: Richard, Barbara, Johan, Carlos, 4 other guys?

The first days of travel go on without much trouble. Acutus swims around the ship, sometimes scouting ahead, all is fine. Then, on the 4th day, you spot a storm brewing really fast on the horizon, and it seems like you're on a collision course with it.

As for grogs, Petrus (Lucas's shield grog) would come along as one of the 4 other grogs.

Also, FWIW (and it's worth something to Lucas), he's not wearing anything made of plant cloth or of wood. This is important because it removes the He prerequisite for Wizard's Leap.

As they travel, Horus often takes to the air , both stretching his wings, and serving as a scout for any potential trouble. On occasion, Lucas joins him, transforming himself into a falcon as well and soaring above the ship to scan the horizon for anything of note.

Just a color post.

Technically Johan is a companion. His curse has made him relativly ineffective so I have not had the chance to play him lately. If I had it to do over, I should have left him a Grog and made carlos as a Companion.
Live and Learn

When the storm appears, Lucas can only shake his head. "I don't have any magic that's very effective against storms," he says. "The best I can do is keep us dry throughout it - and that's not much." He shakes his head slowly, glancing down at the deck. Then he looks up. "Couldn't you just move the ship underwater and let the storm pass over us?" Lucas asks Johan. "It's got to be calmer under the water than it is above."

But now it is Johan,s time to shine!
Per +1, Profession-Seaman 6 (danger), roll of only 2 :frowning:
10, but he can toss one or two Confidence points in to jack it to 13 or even 16.
So...
Time and Distance from the storm? Is it feasible to sail around or away from it? How about above or belowb it?

"If it's safe to sail under it," Lucas replies, "I should prefer under to over. The winds must be terrible up there." He gestures at the storm ahead. "At least we know that there is no wind beneath the sea. As to sailing around, how much would that delay our trip?"

Also, if it matters for these things, Horus has Wilderness Sense 5, Per +3. So he ought to be pretty good about predicting the weather.

Johan smirks. Yeah, but it can be pretty bad below too.Depends on the size of the waves gettin' churned up. Turbulance can extend pretty far down. And underwater, is where the enemy is waitin' on us.
Right now I am trying to figure out which direction it is headed and how fast. Then I'll decide what to do.

Hey, after that though. Y'wanna arm wrestle?

"Well, you know best about matters of the sea," Lucas replies. "I'm no sailor - not by a long shot. Aquam, er water, is not one of my strengths."

When the subject of arm wrestling comes up, Lucas smiles and shrugs. "I doubt I'll be very good at it," he replies. "But I'm willing to give it a try." With his gentle gift, and penchant for gossip, Lucas mixed with the covenfolk more than most magi. And often that meant joining in with some of their games, like this.

Meanwhile, Horus sits perched on the prow of the ship, eyeing the storm ahead. "If you want my advice about the direction of the storm ..." he says to Johan.

Horus makes a Per + Wilderness Sense roll to try and figure out where he thinks the storm is going: 1d10=5+8=13

What's his guess?

While we wait for Fixer to give us the results, Johan makes with the chit-chat. Yeah, I used to be a brawler in bar competitions. My ma would make bets on me. Ran a streak of fifty-sumpin' undefeated matches. Then I got my ass handed to me by this poofta. They say he was really a wizard in disguise. but they tell me he was a she. Magic or no, if some broad can beat me then it's time for a new sport. I took up arm wrestling. And cock fighting. Learning how to raise and train roosters is kinda fun. Guess I'm gettin' mellow in my old age.
(johan is in his late twenties reminiscing of his teenage years)

"We didn't get much arm wrestling at Cunfin covenant," Lucas replies, "it being at a monastery and all. But I didn't spend all my time there. I've seen arm wrestling in taverns and such as I traveled, though I never participated. I can't say that I think much of my chances at it. But it'll certainly be an experience to try." He pauses and considers for a moment. "As for a magus competing and winning, I suppose it's possible under the right circumstances. And there are illusion spells that could make a woman look like a man - I can cast one myself." Lucas smiles. "But I assure you, I'm really a man. Just ask my wife." He winks at Johan.

Why you winkin' at me? You think I'm some kind o' pooftah? I'll box you good I will! And it wern't no illusion. The broad was a mootoh-korpse wizard they say. You think some illusion could beat me? And you, mister la-dee-dah "I never had the chance to try it but it looks like good sport and I have sex with women so you know I am manly". Why I oughtta...
Roberto steps in. [color=red]Knock it off you knucklehead or I'll box you! Focus! There is a massive storm right in front of us. Are you really that crazy?
Johan has the Social Handicap Flaw, demonstrated by his being utterly uncouth and ready to brawl at the drop of the hat.

Wirth nods. Good call.

It is far enough, since Horus saw it coming first, but it’s brewing and closing fast. Unnaturally so, it seems, which is why it surprised even him. Due to his early warning, you’ve got some time to prepare, but there’s clearly something unusual to it.

It is huge enough that sailing around it would prove difficult, although maybe not impossible. Sailing away, maybe, but it’d be a race. Ascertaining its speed is difficult, and Johan’s ship can be quite fast when he gets into it.
Both above and below would be doable, sure.
With the warning Horus gave you, a roll of 10 is enough for Johan to do whatever maneuver he wants to, although I may require further rolls. So what will he do?

Of course, a lot of things depend on what’s exactly happening with that storm.

While the others chitchat, wirth frowns, looking at the storm. He eyes roberto
Reminds you of something, eh?

Acutus, assuming he notices the storm at all being under water, will just swim under it unless that proves impossible.

"Any chance this storm was sent to stop us?" Lucas asks Wirth and Roberto. "That would be particularly troubling in that it means that they know we're coming. Then again, it doesn't take a sage to know that Roberto would come to try and rescue the princess. So even if it is a summoned storm, maybe it's just a precaution on their side."

"So how high and how low can this ship go?" he adds. "High or low enough to avoid the top or bottom of this storm?"

It is still too far for you to see it (vision under water ain't that great), although you can sure push ahead should you wish so.

Wirth looks at lucas
I wouldn't rule it out. Don't like the idea, though. This would mean we're screwed from the get go.

A priori, the ship can go high enough to pass above the clouds. How low? This is a very different question, due to water pressure.
