The Visitor (Spring 1235)

oh yeah
No one will notice you as a bird. Just do what you gotta do and we will wait here for you
Then looking off to the side
Ah, there you are. Wanna towel or a robe or something?

"A towel and my clothes would be nice; thank you."

Roberto maintains strict eye contact as he hands Acutus his belongings.

And Lucas, hold up for a second. Now that we are all gathered together, let us conference before we proceed. I favored a more direct approach but the others favored stealthy recon first. I agreed this was wiser. Lucas and his familiar are going to do a casual fly over as birds. Then he asked me to turn him invisible and I started thinking of just turning myself invisible. Some say I am Reckless and Overconfident, bust I do know fear and I feel it is urgent to make haste before it is too late.
But haste makes waste. The avian recon idea is better. Lucas, I can turn yo invisible and I know Wirth can do it better. How will be able to monitor you though? Will you be able to mentally contact us?

Lucas gives a quick nod of his hawk head when Acutus shows up as a form of greeting. Over his years as a magus, a flying, naked magus is hardly the strangest thing he's ever seen.

"Truly, being invisible is better than being a bird for being inconspicuous," Lucas replies to Roberto. "And being right down in with the people is better than aerial scouting. I also agree that time is of the essence in rescuing your beloved. How about I do a quick fly-over of the area in bird form to get the lay of the land, so that you'll have a better idea of how to make your approach and where to focus your attention when you go down there in person? I can even get an idea of what the locals look like so that I can change your appearance to match, if you like. That might give you an edge when you're down there."

"As for how to communicate with you, I was going to leave Horus here to act as a relay."

Call me the second you percieve trouble. Vaya con Dios...

Riad looks at him quizzically
What is wrong with this guy??? And why did roberto have to bring him along?

I thought lucas could make himself invisible

Wirth frowns
I can, but not for long. Leave the ship, soar high until the spell disappear. Then go down. This should do. I just don't want people see us leave the ship and recon

He has a personal, diameter veil of invisibility. And he has FFM.
For lucas: 1d10=3 + 19 = 22, with range extended to Touch
For him: 1d10=6 + 19 = 25, with duration extended to Sun.

With a dry smile, wirth answer
You, sure. Your carpet?

Good one, but isn't the reverse a better idea? I believe Horus has a keener sight, better perception and awareness. Or do you have a specific idea in mind?

"Oh, Horus is definitely the better scout," Lucas replies. "If it's just a scouting mission, he should go. Originally I was thinking that Roberto might want some magical backup overhead."

If it relies on Awareness, etc., by all means, send Horus.

Wirth smiles
Great idea. I like it.*

But I just realized Wirth can't make horus invisible, due to his Might. Aaargh!

Unless... He's got a CT of 22 over lvl 15, so that's a 7, plus penetration 4 = 11, yes! He can!

The problem for him: He's a little paranoid, and think that, if people are watching the ship and see birds leave it and fly over the island, they'll be spotted as unnatural.
So he'd prefer at least for Horus to quit the ship invisibly, fly high and come down just as any other bird. The chances that someone would see him appear suddenly high in the air are very low, in his estimate.

*Combining sight range spells with a falcon's keen sight, this is great!

Roberto waits tensely...

Lucas watches as Wirth turns Horus invisible, and then listens as he hears his familiar's wings flap and Horus is on his way to the scouting mission.

Be careful, he thinks over his mental link. And make sure you report anything at all of interest. Don't be a hero. That's Roberto's job. Just get us the information we need.

Okay. Horus doesn't feel invisible at all, in fact, he is still be visible to his eyes, although it quickly appears this is a function of his impressive Second Sight.

And so he soars, flying high, darting through the air like an arrow, feeling the sun's rays wash over him. Somewhere below him, wirth's flight is slower, although still quite fast.

Horus is still climbing when he sees a short shimmering on his wings, as the spell dissipates. Turning his gaze to the island below, which seems tinier than ever while the boat is but a small dot.

As he comes down and focuses his sight, more details appear. Some people are into the small fields, toiling, others are trolling down a slope on the mountain, others, still, have noticed the boat and a small gathering is taking place near the port.

Questions, actions?

Reporting what he finds back to Lucas, Horus activates his Eyes of the Falcon ability, allowing him to see even better than before, and wings over the gathering near the port to try and see what that's all about.

Horus already impressive sight gets utterly surnatural, everything appearing as if he was up close.

There are about a dozen of men, half that of women and children. They look sickly and weak, but display more fear and curiosity than anxiety. They are looking at the boat, clearly wondering about it.

Roberto keeps his eyes on the shore, and presses for information.
Lucas! Does Horus see anything unusual? Are we clear to proceed? I am ready to fly over there as soon as he gives the okay.

As far as Horus (and thus lucas) can tell, unless there's something hidden in the houses or with magic (and horus would pierce most illusions), everything is safe. The inhabitants don't look like warriors, and don't appeat to be in fighting condition anyway.

Once Roberto receives this information, he confirs with Wirth (the only one I know of that seems to be able to get Roberto to think before acting). His plan is as before, fly over on the carpet with Riyad, leaving Cidito on ship as a communication link.

Wirth stay invisible, as he doesn't bother to dispell his invisibility.

I concurr. I'll stay with you, just in case. Horus should stay, too. He'll notice any trouble before us

This is Roberto's tactical proposal. Roberto on the carpet making a low slow approach. Riyad, at his side, will carry a flag or banner or something, wave to his people peacefully as we approach. Wirth stand to his left invisible. Acutus swims besides/below us up to shore, Lucas and Johan wait with Cidito and others on the ship. They are to await Roberto' signal before coming ashore. This will be a PoF cast THREE times into the air. He will stand next to the shore so Acutus can see it to.
But at any and all times, react upon your initiative and instinct if the situation changes.

Wirth is OK, save that he prefers to fly along as a crow, to avoid putting all our eggs in the same basket. Using FFM, he can do the same trick as Lucas, using Call to Slumber at Sight range*.

Should he reappear, he'll try to pass himself as Roberto's familiar (Of course magi can have more than one!) or animal companion. He'll also ask of lucas to cast his "Whispering Mind" spell on him, in order to convey the better info that Horus can supply to lucas. Lucas, this reminds you of Roberto's talks about teamwork and sinergy.
Wirth says to lucas:
An advice, though. Maintain the Demanding Spell.**

Since no one else answered in 2 days, I assume there's no other objection.

You take to the air, Riad to your side, looking quite happy to see his home again. As the carpet approaches the island, Horus can see some alarm on the villager's side. The men gesture and talk to the women and children, who quickly gather the rest of the villagers, and flee toward the fields. The men stand, though, despite looking a little nervous at such a display of magic.

Acutus, the sea is dead. There's no other word for it. You can swim and all, but it feels like a corpse, and would be unable to give sustenance to any living being. Clearly, something's wrong here.

Roberto: Riad waves a white flag, which Horus can see assuages somewhat the men's nervousness. The more you near the village, the more concerned Riad looks. You can hear him muttering, although, without Cidito to translate, you're at a loss about what he means.
Once the villagers see him, they clearly relax.
You come as near to them as you want, there's no sign of hostility, and Horus perceives nothing.
As soon as he can, Riad leaps from the carpet, and runs towards the villagers, screaming things in arabic about Roberto. Hearing him, the men explode in joy, run towards Riad, seizing him in their arms, laughing and crying. Neither you nor Wirth's folk ken indicate that they're faking it, nor do they seem ready to strike at you (Of course, they could be happy to have managed to bring you into their deadly trap, for all Wirth knows).

Whatdoyoudo?

 • Told you they were similar! Although IMO, lucas has more potential. But should he choose the ninja road, Wirth will be happy to talk and share texts

** He's not aware of all of lucas abilities, namely that he can use Mutantum magic to boost the duration to Sun. IMO, this could still serve you, though, as this costs no vis.
