Winter Drake Hunt (Winter 1230)

Marko, how quickly can everyone get there? I know Vocis and Carmen can teleport and I think Guillaume's going to fly.

The description of the mental communication familiar power specifies "images and emotions", provided you invested the power at level 15, which I did. Relay the Vision allows Vocis to describe the image Celeste has conveyed and create an illusion of what he's describing.

By flight, it is just over that ridge over yonder
Teleportation would be tricky. Vocis is okay since his Familiar is on the scene. Carmen can carry one person in flight perhaps, maybe Guillme another?
Oh, and one of the drakes knows how to fly. Maurice I think? He can carry the rest. Simon & Vencath will have to crawl and climb.
So potentially...
On scene are Gardiatius and Celeste
Vocis can arrive the next round
Fast flyers arrive in two minutes, slow flyers in five minutes.
How the group proceeds is up to you guys.

I think this is correct. Not quite the same as seeing throgh the wolf's eyes. More akin to Celeste transmitting a mental image of what she just saw. Vocis does not see the creature. He see's the wolf's mental image (memory) of what it looks like. This may be somewhat inaccurate mind you. For example, Celeste's mind's eye draws many several stinklines eminating from the beast. It smells horrid, and Celeste has a cartoonish imagination.

I assumed Vocis would be casting Seven League Stride a few times, never going farther than he can see with Eyes of the Eagle.

Something tells me that Guillaume isn't in a strategizing mood right now...

Vocis: I propose I teleport to the scene, remain invisible, and ensure the Brute doesn't wander off or attack our brother magus. Those of you who can, fly to the scene as quickly as possible and unleash your particular brand of hell. I'll stay clear of the Brute himself, so don't worry about catching me in the crossfire. Is this acceptable?

(OOC - I know this isn't a particularly good plan, but Vocis doesn't know everyone's capabilities and is very concerned about the Brute attacking a lone magus and his (presumably) mundane sidekicks.)

Fair enough.

That's actually perfect, as long as Arans is visible in the distance. When magi and drakes and magi-drakes (hi Vibria) and whatever else start arriving on the scene, he can tell 'his people' to head for the village and go help the other magi with a clear conscience.

Two problems...
You are not certain which mountain peak is which
and
The creature is interposed between you and the destination

Vocis arrives invisibly at that moment. I wish I had a hex grid or something
Anyway, Carmen is the fastest flyer, so she will get there in about two minutes. Guillme in three. Maurice carrying whomever will take five.

Wow.
Excellent.
Extraordinary.
Outstanding.
I'd ask how things could get any better than that, but I'm afraid you'd tell me.

Ad Mortem Incurre

See, that's exactly what I'm talking about!
Incurre, from what little I know about Latin, is singular, not plural. He can charge around like an idiot all day, as long as you leave his Dependents out of it.

So do I. Vocis is going to teleport somewhere high above the Brute, if possible. If it's still busy eating he'll leave it alone. If it starts to look around and get restless, a valiant warrior will step out from behind concealment on the side of the Brute away from Gardaitis's band (Phantasm of the Human Form, boosted to Sight range for level 30, casting score 31 + roll 9 = 40 + aura, cast silent and still with Deft Imaginem). This mighty hero, decked out in silvered mail, longsword, and spiral-patterned shield (Int 2 + Finesse 6 + specialty 1 + roll 5 = 14), will loudly challenge the Brute while casting aspersions on its lineage.

Vocis is also sending Celeste to Gardaitis's general vicinity to tell him more assistance is on the way. He'll let her decide if she wants to remain invisible for that conversation.

My goal here is to stall the Brute until everyone else arrives. Vocis can't do much directly to something this powerful.

Then you need to step forward and be the hero. What would Batman do?

Sounds like a good idea
About a minute into waiting, it finishes off the dead ogres. Then it sniffs the air, as if it can smell magic. You draw this conclusion because it stats to move towards the active magic (the invisibility). You set the illusion off, and it is clearly more interested in that. It skulks towards it.
How does Gardiatius react to the phantasmal warrior?

Gardaitis finishes untangling the mule, looks up... and says a few choice words in mingled Latin and Estonian as he realizes he'd somehow gotten turned around. Despite him trying to work his way around the monster, it is STILL between him and where he needs to go. Which means this is going to get remarkably ugly, remarkably quick.

"I thought we were going THAT way?" opines Martin.
"Yeah, so did I, kid." Gardaitis turns his head, finding Beatriu with his eyes -- she's the older of the two women, and in his judgment more steady. "Okay. I am going to distract it. Once it's not blocking the road, run like hell for safety. The town should be just around this next hill."

He pauses long enough to cast a spell on his shield ("Aegis of Unbreakable Wood", CT+23+roll of 3, cast with plenty to spare) and strides grimly forward. He's just about to open his mouth and shout out a challenge, when...

(Per 0 + Awareness 3 +roll of 9=12. I'm assuming that's enough to let him notice that the image isn't leaving any tracks in the snow. If that's not the case, let me know and I'll edit.)

Wait, what? Did I acquire a mirror-self somewhere? Nah. I've never looked this polished... and last I checked, I leave tracks. His mouth stretches in a grin. It seems I have allies. Some good news for a change.

Gardaitis salutes the "warrior" with his axe, making an obvious show of looking around at the hills behind the image, as if to say "I know you're not real, but I don't know where your controller is hiding." He slows his steps, moving sideways to remain precisely on the other side of the monster from the illusion and triggering one of the effects on his armor to silence it. (It's the third one, "Rebane's Blessing".) He stalks the brute, waiting to see what it does... and if it, say, leaves itself open by lunging at the illusion, he shall lunge forward as well and sink his axe directly into its hamstring. Enormous or not, it would become much less of a threat if it can't walk.

Well, that's the theory, anyway.

(( Gardaitis thinks that it's just him and this other magus. This might be a good time for Celeste to make an appearance and tell him, say, that more cavalry is on the way and not to do anything stupid till they get there. Just sayin'. ))

I seriously doubt that looking for footprints is the first thing that would cross your mind.
But it is clever and moves the story along. So I will give it to you if you spend a point of Confidence (bringing your roll total up to 15).
As far as distance, I am estimating it is about a mile & a half or more before Arans. As the crow flies. On foot through these hills, curving up and around, probably much much further.

I shall wait for Fightmaster's response before going further...

Done.

As Gardaitis is calculating his chances, a voice from behind and above him quietly says (in Latin) Honored magus, more assistance is on the way. My companion asks that you wait for their arrival before attacking the Brute. Assuming Gardaitis turns, he sees a small falcon perched in a nearby tree. It should be but a moment. Watch the skies.

The Flambeau casts a single started glance at the falcon as it begins to speak, then nods and backpedals until he is standing under the tree the bird is perched in. " Sounds like a plan. My thanks for the assistance." He darts a quick glance at the sky, but most of his attention is on the Brute.

""I don't know how much they know about this thing. So if it seems appropriate -- and you are able -- please relay that I believe it to be a spirit of some kind. Type unknown. Possibly elemental. Able to whip up mini-blizzards."

Vibria approaches Maurice with a (hopefully) winning smile on her face. [color=red]"Maurice, would you be so very kind as to fly me to where El Guolio is?" ((If needed: Pre 1 + Charm 2 + die roll of 2 = 5.))

The falcon cocks its head to the side briefly, then says Your message has been delivered. My companion thanks you and will attempt to pass the information on, but may not be in a position to do so.

Speaking of mini-blizzards, it whips one up right now and obscures itself in a whirling cloud of snow...

Blah. Vocis is going to try to spont a Diameter version of True Sight of the Air (level 10) and hope for a good Enduring Magic roll...

(Sta 1 + In 7 + Au 5 + roll 1, 5 + aura)/2 = 11 + aura/2

I can't believe that worked. He did have to use standard gestures and speech to cast it, though.
