1228.2 The Alabaster Lioness

Wen will go about her duties, trying to be inconspicuous while keeping an eye on the inspectors, alert for any sign of trouble. She doubts she can understand the language, but at one point she will try to get close enough to hear them. If she does understand what they're saying, she will try to eavesdrop on them as best she can.

Carlos plays a flamenco on his guitar, and sings about how dutiful and stalwart these inspectors are
I know they cannot understand him. It is more about playing Andalusian guitar riffs that they may like, being charming, cheerful body language and facial expressions, being obviously sycophantic so that it isn't taken seriously or offensive. Just genuine good humor and cheer.
Presence +2, Charm 4, die roll 1d10=10
shit...

whew
thought we were all going to jail for a second there...
Carlos breaks a guitar string, chuckles, Pedro glares at him like he is being an idiot
The inspectors move about as they do. Felo's concern has Roberto concerned. He speaks to Aeolus.
Simply ask them what they are looking for. Felo says something about them seems off though. Not sure what he means. But are you prepared for plan B? I have been given a contact at the covenant of Pyramids. Perhaps we could head that way when plan B is needed?

"Prepared to bribe them? Is that your Plan B?" Aeolus takes a deep breath, "Yes. But I think I'll leave it to Feló, since he has the silver."
Feló does give them a few more minutes, and then he approaches them, and gives them each small pouches which jingle, and then they are off.

Aeolus then rigs his sail and they continue up the Nile.

Wen keeps a very close eye on the two "inspectors" while they're on the ship (she's certain they're up to no good, and are probably just scouting our defences so they can steal our cargo later), but doesn't approach them or say anything to anyone else.

She watches Roberto and Aeolus as the latter does some magicky thing with the sails, then sidles over to Allen.

"Allen...those two inspectors we had to deal with? They kind of rubbed me the wrong way, you know? They remind me of Aeolus and Roberto, in a way."

Allen has Premonitions...
Per +1, Premonitions 4, die roll 1d10=7, = a total of 12
If anything about these inspectors or Wen's information gives Allen a reason to suspect it could lead to danger down the road, he will inform Roberto. Otherwise, he dismisses it as the paranoid ramblings of a French girl 8)

Yes, they give Allen a similar creepy vibe. He gets a slight vision involving these two men involving a fierce combat at some point in the future, it's a flash of sorts, where he sees one of them throwing balls of flame, and the other one shooting lightning from his hands.

Indeed! Well, then, somewhere along the line Allen picked up Visions, but I will roll with it
Allen will inform Roberto about his misgivings. Roberto right away goes and checks that his equipment and vis stock is still intact.
But first he turns to Aeolus. Plan B is to incapacitate all opposition on board and take off quickly. It is a last resort, of course. And I know you know what I meant earlier.
But anyway, Allen here has some misgivings about our inspectors, and his sense for potential danger is pretty accurate. I have a hunch that they may have been sorcerers or enemy wizards of some sort. Allen will tell you all about it. I'm going to go check and make sure they didn't steal my vis!

"Roberto, let me be clear, here and now. Once we arrive in Cairo and you have secured a warehouse or whatever I will be departing.
Roberto's vis is safe (I was assuming he was keeping it on his person)...

Late the next day, they arrive in Cairo...
Who's doing what?
Marcus's contact, Heliobus, is about a day away from Cairo at the Covenant of the Pyramids.

Roberto as of yet still lacks the spell required to transfer vis from one object to another. And he is not about to try and spont it (he is Reckless, not stupid). So the vis remains in the containment forms I obtained them in, probably stored in a chest or footlocker. And there is also that twenty pound stone chess piece .
In Cairo...
Feló, like we talked about, I need you to secure rental of a warehouse or some-such that we can use as a base of operations. Take Albert and Pedro with you. Albert, when facilities have been acquired, set up security details. I am placing Villaume and Dekin under your command for this. Be inconspicuous. Don't walk around armed in public. Inspect the doors and windows and check for secret doors. Pedro, you supervise set up. Have Ache and Miroslav transport our supplies and equipment to the facility. Have them set up a latrine in the back alley, set up our bedding and build cots if need be. Just like back in the old days . Set up a workshop too if you want. We may have use for it, and maybe earn some side money repairing anchor chains.
Allen, take Wen and recon the immediate area. Find some kid looking for work as a translator and guide. Keep in mind that anyone earning their bread this was is a stone cold hustler. Don't let the appearance of youthful innocence fool you and don't get played. Don't hire him on the spot. Offer him or her a job and bring them to me.
Carlos and Pinchas, you guys stay here with me until we have secured facilities.
Then Roberto goes and talks to Aeolus.
I thought you were our ride home. You wouldn't just ditch us here, would you? C'mon man
Did my "Plan B" description bother you? I was just playing with you! You are the one that told me to have a sense of humor

Ache is so thrilled to be in such an exotic place, he's cheerful even when directed to set up a latrine. The process of giving him directions is pretty belabored, since Pedro doesn't speak French and Ache doesn't speak anything else. But Pedro gets the ideas across, and anyway, from what he's heard about Ache's tedious (and numerous) stories, he feels lucky not to share a language with the stout man. Miroslav apparently does speak some French, although as far as Pedro can tell, the two of them spend more words displaying confusion about the other's utterances than they do on actual communication. ((Ache + Miroslav: combined Com -7 ! :open_mouth: ))

bump

Aeolus clarifies matters to Roberto, "No, what bothered me was when your man and your familiar stole my sail. Andru and Carmine might have something to say about me supposedly abandoning you, but I was given some assurance that you had the capability of commanding, leading those under you. That episode suggests that you are incapable, or perhaps those around you are overly difficult to lead. I was your ride home, but I'm not any longer. There's really very little you can do to change my mind."

Feló secures a warehouse not far from the docks. The other stuff I'll handle as needed (if PB wants to actively do anything with Wen).

((Actually, I need to correct myself. Deykin is Wen's brother, and part of the turb. Wen's father is Daffyd, who is getting up in years. Not decrepit by a long shot, but Deykin was a much better choice for the mission if you're looking for a soldierly type. Which blows the story I've been half working on clean out of the water.))

Deykin will follow orders, for the most part. He won't go around with sword and shield, but he does keep a good sharp knife handy, and he will try to wear his armour under his robes if possible.

"Do you want to find a translator while I scout the area?" Wen asks. Assuming so, she will scour the area thoroughly, exploring every alleyway, peering in windows, listening at doors. She will also climb up on the roof of the warehouse (either the one they've secured, or, really, any warehouse in the area they're looking in) to be sure that it's relatively secure from above. I mean, wizards can all fly! Duh!

Hey, that's on you. I mistook you for the adventurous type. There is nothing wrong with my leadership or the discipline of my coterie. I purposefully cultivate bold and proactive people to my fold, for I am an adventurer. Perhaps you may find the fault in my judgment. If you hang out, perhaps we could discuss it and I could learn from you. But you are a free man. I am disappointed, but bear you no ill will.
Presuming my henchman and my cat survive and make their way back to me, and they bring the sail back with them, what is the best way to return it to you?

"Yes, I am adventurous, but I don't steal from others. There is a difference between being bold and proactive and a different from taking from someone they don't know, and who is being a hospitable host. Even if it had been a normal sail, it's not acceptable to take it. Would you take the property of someone in who's home you are guesting, to do with as you please? Had anyone even bothered to ask me for a sail, I could have provided one that would have lasted as long as the ship. But no, two of yours decided to take without little thought to the consequences. That isn't adventure, it's theft. It's rude at best, and malicious at worst." Roberto can see that they will never see eye to eye, but the point about taking items in a person's home is apt, this is his home, it's pretty noticeable that he spends all his life here.

Hey, you don't need to convince me. But you are taking your vengeance out on several innocent people besides myself. "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us". But I suppose that doesn't apply to your grudge.
So go on. Do whatever you feel you must. I won't argue with you, and not really keen on hearing you justify yourself.
So have a nice day. Until we meet again.
Should I just keep the sail?

That quotation from the Lord's Prayer might have an effect upon him, but he doesn't grasp the significance of it, seems oblivious to it, in fact. "I'm sure Poseidon will see to it's return, worry not."

So be it then. Addios amigo, thanks for the ride. Buenos dias

So then Allen goes about trying to find a translator/guide. The docks are a god start, or the markets and close by taverns. Somewhere that international types associate.
