Bjorn raises his sigil with the rest of the magi. "I'm sure you will do fine, Acacius. The grogs just need some time to get used to you and your gift is all."
Acacius ponders for a moment then speak. I am not sure what I should do now… Shall I vote as well and then what… If I am to become our regent that I must know what my duties are so that I don’t overstep my boundaries. My parens covenant where an anarchy. Each magus had their responsibilities and no-one interfered in each others duties unless they put the covenant in danger. If that happened then the punishment where quite severe… Acacius thinks that he has take on too much responsibility.
Aggie snorts. "Well, vote or not, we voted for ye! Congratulations!" he raises his mug.
Rhodri is a bit more helpful. "Here Sodales, here is the Charter, the part that deals with a Regent's responsibilities are on this page." He hands Acacius some of the vellum pages that the magi had worked on about two weeks ago.
Here is the relevant info:
VII THE REGENT
The Regent is empowered to make any day-to-day decisions necessary for the running of the Covenant and not specifically reserved to the Council. Additionally, they shall be granted authority over those Officers appointed by the Council. Any decisions made
shall carry the same weight as if they were made by the Council, and can only be reversed by that body.
The Regent shall be elected during the meeting of the summer solstice from among the members of the Council. Such election shall be by a vote of the Council, in which there is no casting vote. In the event of a tie, the vote shall be recast until a decision has been reached. If no decision is reached after three such recastings, the current Regent shall continue to hold office for another year. In the event that the Council cannot meet, or the meeting is inquorate, the current Regent shall continue to hold office until such time as a meeting of the Council relieves him.
If the Council is unhappy with the Regent's performance of her duties, they may dismiss him. Such a decision shall require a two-thirds majority of the Council.
If at any time there is no Regent, the Council shall meet at its earliest convenience to elect one. Such election shall be in the manner specified above, and the elected Regent shall serve until the next summer solstice.
The Regent shall serve as chairman of the Council, and shall have a casting vote in the event of a tie in any vote of the Council, except on matters of election. Should the Regent not be present, these powers devolve to the eldest Magus present.
As the Regent is expected to spend a great deal of time dealing with the affairs of the Covenant, they may refuse the normal season of service that may otherwise be directed by the Council.
And here is the info about the rest of the magi:
IV DUTIES
The members of the Covenant are to respect the following duties:
- The council may require each member to perform up to two season per two years of such work as they may direct for the good of the Covenant. In the event of an emergency, a third season of service may be required of a covenant member by vote of the council with no more than a single dissent.
At least half the seasons in service to the covenant performed must be for assistance to the faire.
-
Each magus must surrender to the Covenant one half of all vis, money or other resources acquired on expeditions. In the case of uneven amounts, the more favorable portion shall be retained by the Magus. Permanent vis sources discovered while a member of the covenant and not physically part of the magus's body or that of his familiar or apprentice shall belong to the covenant.
-
Any magical item the Magus wishes to sell that is not resulting from Commission must first be offered for sale to the Council to be purchased for the benefit of the Covenant as a whole, then to the Regent, then to the other members in order of age, from eldest to youngest. Only if no member of the covenant wishes to purchase it shall it be offered for sale outside the covenant.
V LAWS OF COMMUNITY
Within the confines of Autumnis Vasium, the Members should do what they can to obey the rules of common courtesy to all others. This shall include, but not be limited to, the following:
- The rules of sanctums shall not be applied to the other Magi of Autumnis Vasium, although normal rules of courtesy are to be observed.
- The rules of courtesy for members to have safety in fellow covenant member's sancta shall be defined as follows: Permission granted to enter sancta before entering, Departure when asked to leave and specific permission must be granted before touching item within the lab with exception of the doorway out,the walls, floor and ceiling. No harm may be offered to the owner of the lab.
- Welcomed Visitors within the Covenant shall not be hurt as long they offer no harm to the covenant and follow the rules that the council shall set for visitors including restrictions in access to any part of covenant.
- Items shall not be taken from other Members of the Covenant, except in extraordinary circumstances. These circumstances shall be reviewed at the next Council Meeting, and the item shall be returned as soon as it is no longer needed.
- If a Magus finds an object or pet belonging to another member of the Covenant, she should return it as soon as possible.
- Magi shall try to control their possessions, pets, children and guests.
"Congratulations Acacius, I'm sure you'll make a fine Regent." Bjorn raises his mug with the rest and takes a swallow. "So Regent, what's the first order of business at our first meeting now?"
Acacius clear his throat. For the moment I have nothing in particular besides my wish to start a hospital and a herb garden. Now is there anything that you my fellow soldaes wish that we should address? I have not yet a clue on how much silver we spend each year and how great our incomes are so it is difficult to say what we can do. Might I suggest that we meet again as soon as we have gotten a clue about the covenants financial state?
Rhodri holds up his hand. "Well Regent, we still haven't officially decided on a name for the Covenant. We need doors down here, and we have to chronicle the vis sources that aren't supplied by the Tribunal. As for silver, we should speak with..." he stops a moment. "The...leader of the clan? Der-Dermot? Is that his name?" Aggie nods. "Plus we get a stipend from the Tribunal, and hopefully we'll make some silver on the faire. Do we wish to assign any tasks this Season? I hope not, I'm sure we'd all like to get our labs in working order."
A reminder, we have two typical sources of income. Currently the only silver we have is from the Stores, which is 40 pounds. That should be enough to make it to the next year. A pound or two was used getting set up here.
"The problems we have is we need to get the clan growing some food and such and figure out what we can use for extra income. We need to scout nearby markets for supplies so we know where we can purchase it. We need to locate what vis is on the lands that we can find and finally, we need to start work on pavillons and layouts for the fair. Lastly, we need to cast an Aegis or this year is going to be a pain in the neck as every small magical creature around will pop in and cause mischief." Siobhan speaks softly. "Obviously I can spend some of my time trying to figure out where to put the tents for the fair and looking for vis sources while I set up my lab. We probably need to find some specialists either in the clan or outside to deal with some of the issues."
"Tessa seems to be a likely choice for some of this. She seems very capable." offers Rhodri.
Aggie snorts. "So ye wanna piss off the locals already be sending Tessa to 'em eh? Ye'd be better off setin' fire to their docks I'd think." he takes another drink off his mug, his rivalry with Tessa well known.
"Well, anyway maybe we should concentrate on the things we can accomplish this Season. The Aegis, the furnishing of the chambers, finding some Vis sources. And again the name. Were we alright with Celibrates Occultes, or...was it Terrae Occultes? If we leave the Clan to their own devices I'm sure they'll do fine, but we might need to know how they intend to make some silver. Can we perhaps send for Dermot?"
Acacius thinks for a moment. Yes we must know how the clan intends to survive. I am most sure that they can care for themselves but we must not have any confrontation with the local. I think that Celibrates Occultes will be a great name for our covenant. Furthermore I think that Tessa could give us excellent support with the more practical details. She seemed be a good leader when we travelled together on our way here.
Regarding duties for us magi I think that it is best if we become accustomed to our laboratories first so that we are in full use of our magical capabilities as soon as possible. The we must each give a helping hand to makes sure that our covenant runs smoothly. We need to be practical we need water, heat and light and vis. Siobhan you mentioned that you could begin to map out the vis sources in our region, personally I am thinking of inventing a few creo ignem charms that will help to provide light for our covenant as fast as possible. Who could take care of assuring that we have enough water within our covenant? Acacius pause for a moment then speaks again. Or what do you think my soldaes?
"Right now we have a rope and bucket set up in the well to retrieve water, that will have to do until we can get our labs ready. A project like that might take more than a single season, but it is definitely necessary. Perhaps I could work on that once the summer begins?" Rhodri asks. "I'll examine the project and see if it's feasible in that time frame."
There's a couple of methods for this.
Base would be Re Aq 4, control a liquid in a forceful but calm way.
If this is an item, the range would be touch (+1). Duration would be Concentration (and the item could concentrate +5) +1, and Target would be Room I believe +2, and then Unlimited Uses +10. Total 30. This would simply draw the water up the well, likely to the spigot that would be enchanted. It would probably require us to make more than one copy for different levels. I can tell right off the bat that Rhodri probably can't make this yet. But maybe a spell or something. Other ideas for the design?
Bjorn nods to Rhodri, "If your findings determine that an item would best handle the problem, I would be more than happy to on the project."
"What about light and heat? We have enough air vents for fires, right?" He glances over to Rhodri. "We just need to get some clan members to start cutting down some of the trees out there. With a low level Perdo Herbam spell, we should be able to dry the green wood so it will burn better. I was planning on taking my few free days this season and exploring some of the woodland around us. I'd like to see what kind of local wood I have to work with for my craft."
"Cooperation might actually work. It might let us make something that we normally couldn't. I will have to see what sort of spell I can improvise to detect the vis on my free time. " She ponders what is needed to detect vis easily. It should stand out.
OOC: I was looking at covenants, since our labs have no refinement score, we can get in and start working this season, we don't need a second to familiarize.
Hmmm, detecting vis: base 1, +3 smell, +2 sun for level 10 or base 1, +4 sight, +1 concentration for a 10: casting is base 21+roll.
Perhaps one could make water come out of the well with out the use of magical items. That is if we wish to save vis. The light spell I intent to create is a circle enchantment that creates light on a object within the circle. Perhaps we could create a spell that would move water through a circle that is placed on the end of a pipe that is placed in the well. Any way I think that each of us should have the confidence to act as he or she wish when they solve the task given to them. Heat will be a problem. I think that it is more pleasant if we can avoid using fire places for heat. Acacius pause for a moment. I don’t know but would a fire turned into stone still emit heat? If so then a circle spell would perhaps suit our needs.
"Venting should be sufficient, small shafts lead up from the ceilings in the different chambers. We are hoping that it will be...filtered as it leaves the ground so as not to make much notice. However we're not certain how it will look. Water in a basin? That could work, I had ideas of using some pipes and taps on each level, which will likely be more complex. I think Ring spells would be ideal for many of the tasks we need, as well as saving on vis. We could simply carve those spells in several places throughout each chamber and have plenty of light. For warmth one big Ring spell could be used for each chamber. Would we need to worry about Warping though if we kept such a spell active?"
Aggie is quietly snoring as he leans back in his chair.
Acacius: I thought more that we should use a ring enchantment that did not affect the entire room. Like a muto enchantment that cause a fire within the circle to give off more heat or anything similar. I do not wish that our servants or members of the clan suffer from warping. A relatively weak spell should do so that a torch gives of the same heat as a fire place or a magical flame that burns without fuel and give of heat without smoke. It is my belief that if we use our magic to help the lives of our covenfolk then we can perhaps to help bridge the rift between us that is caused by the gift. Even if we not could find a solution by magic then we should make sure that we could obtain our supplies the mundane way.
"It should not be too difficult to create a spell that generates light for the duration of sun that we can light rooms by casting it upon torches to light rooms. Perhaps we create a lantern that you put a small stone in and it lights the stone for the day. A servant could put a bunch of stones into the lantern one at a time and then walk around to rooms to put the stones into lanterns to light rooms, collecting the expired light stones for next activation. We can have it as formulaic spell if needed too to light rooms that are unused." Siobhan considers. "We could do circular lanterns and cast ring duration flames which means they would last forever too I guess. I just don't like having unnecessary flames."
"Why not have sources that are on all he time by a circle spell and then just cover them with a cloth or something when the light isn't needed?" suggests Rhodri. "Regarding the water, would we prefer the basin so the water is continuously drawn and collected to a spot? We could even have several basins like that, perhaps that will drain to the different levels, mundanely if possible. The basins could have ring spells in them to keep the water pure, and even to transport the water back to the well to prevent over flow?"
Acacius: We should move on. Each magus takes care of his assigned task in a matter that he or she see fit. I will make light, Siobhan takes care of vis searching, Rhodri you will take care of the water supply and Bjorn perhaps you could take care of the heating issue. For our servants best we should keep them safe from warping. Now shall we see the leader of the clan so we can hear how they intend to make a living?
"Siobhan, I already have a Vis detection spell in my repertoire, if you would rather I write out the lab text so you may learn it instead of having to invent your own spell.
"Rhodri, I would personally prefer a basin of water so it is always available immediately. You never know when you might have to put out a fire quickly. And a few years from now, we could install more decorative fountains to hold the water to add some splendor to this place.
"I believe I might be able to create a device that instills heat into an object that then can be moved around the covenant to the different rooms, similar to what Siobhan suggested for light. If that is considered the best suited task for me this season."
At Acacius' command a servant that was on hand walked quickly out of the chamber to go and fetch Dermot and Tessa.
Rhodri nods at Acacius's firm suggestion to move on, his thoughts already going to how he'd move the water and try to complete it in one Season.
"I agree, we should meet the water needs early, and strive for elegance later." One of the problems with the basin idea (which was far more likely to be accomplished) was that it would overflow if left on the whole time. He tapped his voting sigil thoughtfully as the servants footsteps echoed and faded up the stair well.
