Ancient History (Spring 1242)

silveroak is correct. You were originally sent here to recover the documents. no one realized that Flavia was in Paris. She'd disappeard in the Roman Tribunal, and the search effort was going on down there. Not that rescuing Flavia wasn't an important thing, once you learned she was there. But that was meant as a surprise.

In the Alleyway Near the House

"Roberto sez to get Flavia to safety," Cidito reports. "After that, you'se in charge here. Just get the girl back to the safehouse. That's where Roberto will be."

"Roberto's right," Lucas says. "We need to keep you out of their hands, Flavia. If they capture you again, they're likely to immediately resort to mentem magic to get what they need. We have a safehouse near the river that we've been reinforcing for the last couple of days. They'd be hard-pressed to take you there."

"The real question is how important the scrolls are that they're holding." He looks inquiringly at Flavia.

"Very," she replies. "Andreas may be a plodder, but he'll eventually figire things out. That or they'll bring in someone else who can. I'm sure they can use blackmail or something similar to get a proper scholar to look at the documents. They've already learned far too much."

"Right, then," Lucas continues. "We'll need to go in once more to get the scrolls. The real question is now or later?"

"Right now it's broad daylight and they may be on alert. Not the best time for an assualt. I've been inside and seen where the documents are probably located. The room is locked and there are guards just a few paces away. I could get in and open the door, in all likelihood. But then it gets chancy. I might be able to put Forratus to sleep, though in this Aura I can't be certain."

"It's a level four Dominion Aura," Flavia adds and smiles. "Auras are kind of a specialty with me."

"The danger is that Forratus might cry out, or one of the guards might hear the door and come to investigate. In that case, things could go downhill quickly. Then it's a matter of whether I have to search around for the scrolls or not."

"I suppose," he adds as a thought occurs to him, "I could put him to sleep through the window - my sleep spell is sight-ranged. Then I could leap in and search the room. Better yet, leap in first and sleep second so that I can catch him if he falls out of his chair. Still, I'd feel better if there were some kind of distraction going on to draw the guards away. Vibria do you think you could manage a distraction while Rilcheaux and Cidito escort Flavia to the safehouse? We can use the crowds to our advantage. Given that this is their base of operations in Paris, they're probably more worried about casting flashy magic here than we are. And the Aura effects them as much as it does us. The big threat is really the mundane guards. And they can hardly have them drawing steel on a Paris street in broad daylight."

"The next question is when: now or later. Now has the advantage that the team that went off won't be back yet - though if Roberto didn't take care of them, they'll be hack soon. It also means we can take advantage of the protection of the daylight. Later means we can go under cover of darkness, which may or may not be an advantage to us. It also means they'll be at full strength and will know that Flavia is gone."

"For my part, I say we strike while the iron is hot and try for the scrolls now. What do the rest of you think?"

"I'm for that," Flavia replies.

As she speaks, a pigeon settles next to the group.

"What did I miss?" the pigeon says, revealing that it's actually Horus in disguise.

FWIW, I really thought that being in a level 4 Aura would eliminate most magic in this encounter. I thought it would certainly stop anything covert because the -10 penalty for no words on top of the -12 for the Aura would be too much to allow most spells to go through without drawing attention. I really wasn't thinking of the fact that Lucas can cast without words or gestures.

I also forgot that the Dominion Aura gives a -12 penalty to magical Second Sight. So my invisibility detector in the house wasn't able to do a very good job. :frowning:

tl;dr - Let's have Rilcheaux, Cidito, and Horus take Flavia back to the safe house, get Vibria to set up a distraction, and Lucas plan an infiltration.

Back At the Safehouse

Roberto arrives at the safehouse with no trouble.

The penalty for the Aura is only -3 here. That's why you chose this place.
Roberto's invisibility is down and he's revealed in all his battered glory.

Roberto can now act without penalty until sunset.

Lucas can also cast a healing ritual, and he keeps Corpus vis on him. He can't cast the spell any quicker, however, so timing is still an issue.

:exclamation:
 One of Roberto's planned-ahead plans finally worked! I knew Arachne at the safehouse was a good idea!
The picture is set. A dark wharehouse, the rugged and battered Roberto lying on the cot. Old Arachne tending to his wounds. Roberto in quiet contemplation of what to do as the wise old mga lectures him with kindness.
He receives an update from Cidito.
Tell Lucas that plan sounds good. The documents are important. Flavia is a surprise situation and she is more important. But the documents are still important. If he can get them, get them now. Once Flavia gets here, I will prepare for extraction at sunset.
Then Roberto looks up to the old soldier Arachne, and says with a grimace...
We need to be prepared to move fast, and we may experience some conflict if things go sour. Cidito and Rich will escort Flavia here where I can protect her.
Oh yeah, they found Flavia.
Lucas and Vibria will make an attempt at retrieving the documents. I want to be ready to evacuate as soon as they get back. Hopefully before sunset, but we will wait if we have to. I might need you to prepare me another endurance bead and a wound binding web. Got any Sensu beans?

Rilcheaux thinks, then responds, "My inclination is to try and arrange something to pin the down, create a mundane situation that requires them to act delicately while we infiltrate. However that takes time, and if they are down a magus there is no time like the present. And while enchantments are a better bet than spells in a dominion aura, I am not especially well equipped for direct confrontation. With a little more planning I could have gotten ahold of a sleeping draught from a philosophical alchemist and laced their morning food with it, but again, time and hot iron. As I mentioned before, I established, or at least made an attempt to establish, something of a local credential for Cidito earlier, described him as the escaped cat of a well to do child, with a reward in the offering, so as long as he acts like a cat he will probably have some freedom to operate inside the house that the rest of us would not enjoy. Are we certain the safehouse remains secure? Much has happened that I clearly do not know about, and we have other options in reserve if it may have been compromised."

mrowrw
It was a clever idea. But it doesn't fit the situation. And just to let you know, my disguise enchantment is warped. I look like a stuffed animal or a cartoon or something. In my normal guide, it is obvious I am the famous Cidito.
And asidze alla dat, I don't think these guys give a hoot about some lost cat.
I haz my orders. I am escorting Flavia to meet Roberto. I could use your help. I expects confrontation and, well I ams just a cat.

And it is a great chance for us to improv off of each other
We should probably take Horus with us to keep the com link open between Roberto and Lucas.

"If we're lucky," Lucas adds, "they won't realize that Flavia is gone yet and won't know to pursue. They checked up on her just before I got her out of there. Hopefully it'll be a while before they check on her again. And we are planning a distraction as well. Any thoughts on what kind of a distraction you can make, Vibria?"

As the magi and familiars talk, Diego arrives on the scene. It takes him a while to find the alley where the discussion is taking place, but from above he eventually locates it and settles down among the other magi.

That was my thought as well.

OOC: In retrospect, I probably should have had a guard up in the garret. But at the time it seemed to me that secrecy and binding and gagging Flavia would be sufficient to keep her secure. And I only had a limited number of soldiers to work with to cover the whole house.

"If it is more important to keep the document out of their hands than to retrieve it, might I suggest setting the house on fire? It improves the odds of them losing the document if we fail and would definitely be distracting."

"That would certainly be a good distraction," Lucas agrees. "But I'm not ready to start a fire in Paris for this mission. With those houses packed cheek-by-jowl, a single house fire could easily get out of hand. We might be the cause of a major fire that could kill people and leave others injured and homeless. I'm just not willing to put innocent lives at risk, even if it means a better chance of meeting mission objectives."

"If this house were that tightly packed Bernat would have penetrated it far more easily. This isn't some low rent tenement, this house has a garden and space that would insulate it from other buildings. In any case it is time for us to escort Flavia to the safehouse." Rilcheaux nods to Cidito and offers Flavia his arm to escort her in proper style, hopefully avoiding any suspicion despite what her clothes might look like after her captivity, back to the safe house.

As his customary with her, Arachne marks a slight pause to consider the situation

Let me see... Once she gets there, if she trusts me enough and I expand some energy, I should be able to translocate her to the safety of andorra, at the cost of some warping to her. I can follow, and make sure she's okay. With her out of the way, your task here should be easier.
She looks at Roberto
Taking me for granted, are you? You flambeau, you're really all the same, she says, falsely complaining. Although she was scared for Roberto, she enjoys being somewhat back in the field, her skills put to good use.

She goes to her bag, searching his contents, and takes out a crude, hand-sized spider, which she hands to Roberto.
There you go. It's the only one I took, though, as I didn't expect this to turn into a combat mission. I thought that, at least, Lucas and Rilcheau should be able to reign you in. Whatever.

Here. Put it on your wounds, and say "Heal this wound". Simple. This shall work 3 times, no more, no less. And it won't heal you, just keep you from bleeding everywhere.
As for the bead, you may keep it. One time only, it shall protect you from pain, if you but hold it while uttering "Strength of the Earth, flow into" whatever your target is.

Be careful, though. These may bind your wounds, and hide them from you, but these are stopgap mesures. Your wounds'll still be there, and may prove the death of you. I heard of one mage dying when his healing spells where dispelled. So whenever you can, I'd advise you to get some real healing.

But what the hell is a sensu bean??? Dimir Taar referenced these from time to time, but never told me anything. Is this a flambeau joke?
(Yes, she goes back to pontification when she explains her magic^^)

Edit: I made a small error. The Flambeau magus is not Gentle Gifted. Only the Tytalus magus was. The Flambeau magus should not have been called Gentle Gifted. Flavia would have said that he was clearly Gifted by her reaction to him when he interrogated her.

I am not sure what a Sensu bean does exactly, but they are the stuff of Flambeau legend. *Vegetius of Flambeau was said to carry a bag of them at all times during the Schism War. Eating one would multiply his power. What that means is up to the imagination. But I have heard that folk witches can make potions that restore vitality lost from Fatigue. I have a natural talent my parens didn't have and was envious of. I can exert vitality to boost the casting power of my spells.
See how that combination could be useful and lead to myths of multiplying power?
That or it was healing ritual in a watching ward. I keep meaning to set myself up with a back up like tht. But it seems like such an expensive waste!
Hold on a second...
Roberto receives and transmits quick communiction with Cidito, but think-speaks out loud.
Yes? ... No. ... ... Okay. ... ... What? ... That is a horrible idea! Tell Diego not to start any more fires! ... ... It was who? ... Oh. Well, that is unexpectedly bold and innovtive of him, but still no. Fire is unforgiving and chaotic. If I was on hand to control it maybe. ... ... Tell Lucas that is fine. ... Just get Flavia here as quick as possible. We are breaking down the fort here. I will send her safely underway and wait for further orders from Lucas.

I'm just waiting for Peregrine to post Vibria's response to the whole question of a distraction. Then I can move things forward.

Arachné: :open_mouth:

Oh Arachne, these crazy kids. It's Richeaux tht wants to start a fire. Which, coming from him, is not as crazy an idea as it sounds. It burns out the enemy, and Vibria can just walk in and take them. Finding them will be easy. The guy on fire trying to rescue something important has them.
Don't laugh! It was a tactic often used back when I fought in the Reconquista as an apprentice. One time Santigo...
I shouldn't tell you that. If anyone asks, I did it.
But still, not in Paris. We are not at war with the Franks. Fire is to chaotic. No way to insure containment. Even with magic. The wind can shift and you never know how the dice will roll.
And I kinda like Paris. It is the one bright spot in this twisted Norman Tribunal. The mgi may be warped in the head. But the French themselves know how to live civilized with dignity and luxury.

"Well, since fire is no longer an option," Vibria says with a pointed glare at Cidito. She thinks for a minute before she sighs resignedly.

"We could go for the ol' 'Damsel in Distress' routine. Make it seem like I've been attacked, draw the guards out, or at least get their attention while people retrieve the papers."

"Anything that'll keep the soldiers focused on the door and not the upstairs," Lucas replies. "And for the record, if there weren't the danger of flames spreading, I'd be all for setting the place on fire."

"Well," he adds. "Rilcheux, Flavia, Cidito, and Horus, you four better get going before everything comes down. We'll meet you back at the safe house."

"Diego, you stay here with Alonzo overhead. I'll meet you back here when it's all done. Then you can have Alonzo let out a screech. That'll be the signal to Vibria that the mission is over and she can stop the distraction. You'll also be backup for Vibria in case anything goes wrong."

"VIbria. give me to the count of a hundred to get into place and then start your distraction. You can stop it as soon as you hear Alonzo screech."

OOC: Feel free to post Vibria's distraction and we'll go from there.

"Before you go," Vibria says as she leans down and tilts her head, "Punch me. Hard. Right here." She indicates her left cheek, right below her eye. "Make it a good one, I want the bruise to be believable." She tears the sleeve of her robe.

Once she's ready and has waited the appropriate time, she staggers out of the alley and start screaming. "Help! Help! He's going to kill me!" She stumbles to the house and starts pounding on the door, looking over her shoulder.

(If I understand the language rules, since Vibria has Occitan of 5, that gives her a de facto French of 3, which should suffice.)

"You want me to what?" Lucas exclaims without even thinking. "I can't do that!"

"Okay, I see what your plan is," he adds hastily. "I can do it, but I'm not going to like it."

The invisible magus moves over toward Vibria. It was a good thing that no one could see how hesitant he was right now. Punching a friend of his, and a lady no less, was quite unconventional, and not something he was at all comfortable with. But if he was going to lead this team, he couldn't very well ask anyone else to do what he wouldn't do himself. Thankfully Talbot had insisted he practice some common brawling with the redcaps, so at least he knew how to make a fist. He stands there, fist raised for a moment and thinks what Cecelia would say.

First she'd ask how he could even think of doing something like this to his friend and sodales, Vibria. Then she'd remind him to aim for a point behind where he was striking so that the punch would have some force to it. If he was going to do it, she'd say, best he do it right and on the first try.

"Sorry about this," he says to Vibria, then he decks her with all he's got...which turns out not to be a whole lot. Physical violence never was his strong suit. Nevertheless, he gives her a bit of a shiner, which is enough for her purposes.

Then he says, "I'm off now. I'll make it up to you later." A hundred count later, Vibria is out the alleyway and rushing toward the house.

As she gets to the house, a few people on the street start watching her. The performance she gives is certainly eye-catching. She bangs on the door and a few moments later a man wearing a chainmail hauberk answers the door. At least two more can be seen over his shoulder. He looks her up and down and listens to a few words of her plea before he laughs.

"Didn't like the party you were at and came here for a better one?" he asks mockingly.

Meanwhile, Lucas waits hovering in the courtyard of the house, next to the window of Forratus' study. This time, he knows what to look for, and he notices a set of old scrolls that the man is working on. Just what they need.

Waiting until he hears Vibria's shouts and the banging on the door, Lucas proceeds with the mission. Soundlessly, he casts a spell that will move him into the office, and in an instant he's inside. Alas, while the casting of the spell is silent, the spell itself makes a slight sound as the air rushes in where Lucas was.

Forratus hears the sound and looks up, glancing out the window. Thankfully, not a magus himself or one who deals much with the same, present situation excluded, he doesn't recognize the sound for what it is and he's not immediately suspicious. Unfortunately, one of the guards also hears something and decides to see what it was. He moves back to the stairs and climbs up toward Forratus' study.

Meanwhile. at the door, Vibria continues her distraction.

Lucas has a base to hit of: 0 (Dex) + 1 (Brawl) + 0 (Unarmed Attack Mod) = +1
Lucas punch: 1D10+1 = [7]+1 = 8 - 2 (Str) = 6 damage
Vibria has a Soak of +2 with a Corpus of 9, which gives another +2 vs. punches. That's 4. 6-4 = 2, so she takes 2 damage.
This'll be scuffling damage, but will definitely make a mark. She is Winded (If I understand the rules right.)
(As a side note, Lucas should not get into a fist fight with Vibria.)

Vibria has a Guile of 2 and a Pre of 1.
Vibria Guile check: 1D10+3 = [1]+3 = 4
Multiplier: 1D10 = [5] = 5 = 5*2 = 10; not bad

The man at the door can make his own Int + Guile check to see if he cottons to what you're doing.
Bad Guy guile check: 1D10+5 = [2]+5 = 7; fail

Darn. I was going to have him send someone upstairs to check on Forratus and Flavia if he made that check.

Wizard's Leap through the Window: stress die +22 (ReCo(An)) + 2 (Sta) -12 (Aura) = +12 (vs target of 15)
Wizards Leap casting check: 1D10+12 = [5]+12 = 17; success

Perception Check for guards: 0 (Per) +3 (Awareness) +3 (because there are a bunch of them) -2 (distraction) = +4
Perception Check for Forratus: 1 (Per) +3 (Awareness) = +4
The guy at the door doesn't get a roll since he's at the door dealing with the distraction.
I'll say it's Hard for them since it's out in the courtyard, but Average for Forratus, since it's just outside his (closed) window.
Forratus: Forratus Per Check: 1D10+4 = [5]+4 = 9; success
Guards: Guards Per Check: 1D10+4 = [6]+4 = 10
Well, I guess someone investigates after all.

Pause for Vibria's reaction to the utter lack of sympathy.

Vibria keeps looking over her shoulder frantically, trying her best to look terrified. "You've got to help me, he's going to kill me when he finds me again, you've got to hide me, please!"

New Guile check (if appropriate): Pre 1 + Guile 2 + die roll of 0...well, carp. Botch check of 8, so a final roll of 3. Well, now we know why she's not one of The Baron's Men.
