Too bad it's a chandelier and not able to play off her Re and Te strengths somehow. A statue of seven grotesque imps, who develop swelled heads, purses, members or bellies, draw their sword, turn green or nod off to varying degrees as appropriate sounds kinda fun.
That shouldn't be too difficult. Although Janus may want to brush up on his Vim before undertaking this.
Although I don't like the sound of that guideline - it does sound like you could do...illegal stuff with that as well...
A lot of the time I find the guidelines vague as to flexibility. Could one invent a spell or build a device with this guideline at force the demon to do whatever one wants at the given time? Or is it to force a demon to do one specific thing - chose at time of invention - at will?
I had a similar idea regarding figures that had appendages that acted as dials. I decided that that using the light made it easier to notice that something was up. Of course my idea wasn't even half as cool as your imps. Sadly, switching the form of the item won't make the enchantment of it any easier.
I was going to use rego mentem 5; control a disembodied spirit. That way it isn't infernal specific.
Penetration is the issue for Andreva. At range touch, target Room, and Duration Sun it is a level 30 spell. Her lab total of 60 can invent it in a season but her casting total of 27 isn't going to get her any real penetration. I also don't anticipate Andreva pumping up mentem or her penetration score enough to get any serious penetration ever.
Thus I was going to open a a device for enchantment, attune it as her talisman and then by taking advantage of shape and material bonuses and the talisman bonus spend three more seasons enchanting it with 20 levels of penetration (penetration of 40) and a few uses per day.
I considered a charged device as an alternative but with an incorporeal demon I can't think of a situation where the characters aren't firing blind. She'd need a lot of charges.
Ah, the old Mentem vs. Vim for spirits. Or [Form] vs Vim for that matter.
The Mentem guideliens are unspecific as to which spirit it deals with, but IMHO a reference to ghost smells like Magic affiliated since Faerie and Infernal Ghosts are called with these prefixes.
For wards etc. against Faeries of specific Forms the spell is specific for both Form and Realm
For Vim guidelines one seems to only need specify Realm, with Form being irrelevant since you're using Vim.
We've always had the interpretation that:
*Vim affects all creatures of a single Realm, regardless of the Form they are associated with
*[Form] affects creaturues of this specific Form from one specific Realm. With [Form] being Auram, Aquam, Ignem, Terram, Mentem...really anything besides Vim.
So IMHO a ReMe spell would work on (Magical) Ghosts meaning spirits of dead people. This seems to me the most normal use of it. Or it could specifically be used for Infernal Spirits. I think it's too harsh to enforce that they need to be Mentem associated but they must at least be in spiritual meaning non-corporeal form. And I can't remember how many demons are corporeal or if all are non-corporeal with some of them taking physical form?
As for T:Room that's very good, if the demons are inside. But if not? T:Ind can affect them one at a time, but how do you even sense them in order to target them?
T:Ind for DEO does not seem to be a problem, but you can't use them until you somehow sense the demon is there.
So, if a demon is possessing a person, and Andreva's Imp-dials swing up to 11, one could start to use DEO to destroy the demon, or ReVi - but does the demon-spirit need to be forced out of the person/exorcised/whatever before you force it to take physical form so you can whack it with physical damage? Or does 'force to take physical form' automatically result in the demon-spirit needing to leave the possessed body?
Also, how flexible do people think spells or effects made with this ReVi5 Command a demon to do the caster's will is? If it is very flexible the spell is highly suspicious to be caught having. If each spell is only good for a specific action (perhaps as broad as: fight those guys, or: teach infernal stuff) a spell for force a demon to take corporeal form is less suspicious IMHO.
If we're talking after the first 4-5 years into the Year +46-60 period Janus can probably rack up a device lab total around 100, with Familiar and apprentice assisting.
One could use rego mentem could be used to order a creature with an int score to do a thing and not worry about realm at all. Naturally such an effect would target all of the people in a room as well. Yet I don't see any issues cropping up with giving them a mental compulsion to materialize (the magi couldn't make themselves cast cloak of mist I guess).
I think that this would be base 15 the same as control a human as long as you can see him or summon a ghost. You could argue for a lower level because you're not able to vary the command as one could with the control a human guideline, but the level 10 stuff seems clearly weaker.
That puts the effect at level 40 can Janus do that with his huge magic theory and lab (or Hector with his rego or Saorise with her Mentem)?
For a device Janus' has a ReMe lab total - with assistants - of 87 + S&M. Doable for the effect but not for very good Penetration. It could be made as Invested Device over two seasons - that'd really boost the Pen.
Of course his Vim score is 5 better than Mentem, so I think Janus is better off with the force spirits to obey ReVi 5 guideline. Much better for Penetration. Do we need D:Sun? If the purpose is to kill the demons physcially isn't D:Conc enough? I might go for quite a deal of charges per day, if not actually Unlimited, so the process can be repeated.
Base 5, +1 Touch, +1 Diam, +2 Room; Mod +5 (24 use per day) is 30 and anything else left over is used for Penetration
A glove (+4 affect things by touch) adorned with a magnet (+2 Re) and some brass (+4 demons) inscribed with ink of hermes (+3 vim) gives S&M +13 but Janus is capped at 12 with Puissance and speciality.
Rego Vim lab total 104 so a final level of effect of 52 is possible for a Lesser Device. With the above calculation Janus gets (52-35=)17 for Penetration 34. That should probably be okay, right? If the demons have higher Might than 34 we're screwed royally! Sure local auras can affect Penetration totals, but 34 should be enough.
She is most welcome to use the lab text generously copied by Janus' apprentice.
Janus has a habit ox exploiting every single point of lab total even if it results in ridiculous number of uses per day or Pen.
But for a device intended for others to duplicate hf may pull hus punches.
What kind of Rego Vim lab total can Andreva muster around year 50?
I'll have Janus build the device and then post the details, perhaps tonight CET. Right now I have to help someone move.
Just wanted to let you know that I am inspired what you create for Bausas, Andreva, Janus and Hector - my progress might not be as creative in terms of spells and items, but I am re-learning and feel the creative juices are flowing again I find the "7 Deadly sins detector" phenomenal! Let me know if Saoirsé can or should anything for you guys in the next 15 years
After a season creating a Gauntlet to Scourge the Unclean Spirits, she'll work more with the Measure of the Deadly Sins.
There is an issue with device as it stands. She was originally thinking that the device has no penetration so it will target the coven folk or non-protected guests at Anulus Connectons. But if a demon was in the same room it would target the demon as well. Normally this wouldn't be an issue the demon has magic resistance the item doesn't penetrate and the device works as intended. But if a demon wanted to screw with us (they'd destroy the item, wait that wasn't where I was going) they'd lower their resistance and let the effect target them then the device would report any values that the demon chose because of the limit of the infernal.
Andreva will spend a season inventing the following spell
This spell specifically targets a group of people, for instance all of the folks in the room with Measure of the Deadly Sins, the group will naturally not include any disembodied spirits. She can use this as a check on the device. IF the strength of an emotion on Measure of the Deadly Sins is significantly different than what she detects with Test the Mood of a Crowd then she can deduce that something is messing with her.
I have no good idea on how to integrate her casting sigil (baroquely over ornamented)'
Also a few intellego mentem spells are never a bad idea.
Andreva acquires a casting tablet for the following spell (I believe it is her only lab text /casting tablet for the 15 year period that comes from outside of the covenant)
She does so much with craft magic and finesse that it is silly for her not to maximize perception. She was probably searching for a way to get this ritual for a decade or two.
