I once wrote a typo in a forensic psychology report talking about a client’s “tactical hallucinations.”
It was a typo for tactile, and fortunately I caught the typo before submitting the report!
Though I’m pretty sure we’ve all experienced tactical hallucinations during RPGs.
Isn't that the actual definition of D&D?
Use Perdo Corpus for laboratory defense, since that's what the twelve founders intended. Four hedge wizards break into my covenant. "Quid est?" As I cast my Parma Magica and grab my lab notes. Use my enchanted staff on the first man, he's dead on the spot. Attempt to remove the tongue of the second man, miss him entirely because I botched the roll and nailed my sodales' apprentice. I have to resort to the group ritual I had been preparing, "Manus Torquentes Lapides!" the incantation gropes two men in the area, the screams and moans wake up the lord. Gesture wildly and slap the last terrified heathen. He lies lifeless on the ground as I extract vis from his body since Perdo Corpus is impossible to recover from. Just as the twelve founders intended.
How do you extract vis from a human body?
he was a transylvanian storm wizard and had some of the magic mountain ice in his pocket
Then you would extract the vis from the ice you looted from the body, not the body.
Cast "Gather Essence of the Beast" with a Corpus requisite to concentrate it in a tooth, and then pull really hard. Without ReVi magic, you'd need to carefully consider where the vital essence would be circulating, which organs would have the most of what you are looking for, and then carefully render them down - so a Folk Witch probably has to do a lot of rendering down of a corpse and slowly stewing bones to get it.
I wonder if a folk witch could use dowsing at that range to figure out the best part to take?
I've always been curious about the whole "harvest magi for vis" thing. It was prominently featured in Mirarion's Schism War diaries, but I've never managed to find any evidence in the RAW as to hermetic magi leaving vis behind in their corpses. Any ideas?
I think it was just made up for that story (or the author's campaign), as I've never found it in a source book. It's a neat idea, but probably not suitable for all sagas - could make an interesting basis for a mystery cult.
I cannot remember where I read - it can be as old as 2nd or 3rd edition - that Diedne might have been able to get vis-equivalent from sacrifice, sacrifice with magical ability bringing more vis. It is definitely not 5th, but no clue where I get this sliver of knowledge.
That's interesting, though the author had the harvesting taking place on the other side of the war. I remember there was a military hospital, I think it was Tremere, where they were doing triage and "harvesting" those with worse wounds to save those that could be ritual-saved.
Edited to add that I found the story, in Games From Folktales: The Mirarion
I definitely recommend reading it, as it is excellent.
It might have been a connection back in 3rd for the Tremere as a connection to them being a vampire family in VTM, back when White Wolf was trying to link all their games together into the world of darkness.
The Mirarion was posted (according to the link) in 2015, a decade after the 5th edition was released, by a member of this very forum.
I doubt it was a 3rd edition remnant. But we could just wait for the author to chime in?
