Character Creation for callen (OOC)

About the focus, looking at the Grand Grimoire it would seem the following spells would fall under this:

  • A Moment's Reflection (CrMe 20) removes the Obsession trait imposed by a demon's power (A&A p.35)
  • Construct the Memory Palace (CrMe 20 ritual) permanently constructs an extremely detailed locus in the target's memory palace (TMRE p.27)
  • Memory Palace of the Sage (CrMe 25 ritual) creates a locus for the content of a book inside your memory palace (TMRE p.27)
  • Gift of Reason (CrMe 35) permanently increase the target's Int by 1, no higher than 0 (ArM5 p.148)
  • (Mental Characteristic) of the Follower (CrMe 35) permanently increases a mental characteristic by 1, no higher than 0 (HoH:TL p.103)
  • (Mental Characteristic) of the Heroes (CrMe 60) permanently increases a mental characteristic by 1, to no more than +5 (HoH:TL p.103)

...as well as about half of the PeMe spells (basically most of those with Momentary duration).

I think I would exclude Lay to Rest the Haunting Spirit because the spirit may not actually be destroyed by the spell, just "weakened to helplessness", but that is debatable.

So the scope of the focus would be fine for me.

Not actually. Most of the Momentary don't permanently alter a mind. They just quell an emotion or similar and then it can return at its own rate:

Unlike memories, destroyed aspects of the imagination, cognition, common sense, and estimation naturally restore themselves.

I would exclude that as well. I don't consider a ghost just a mind. It's a spirit with a mind. The spirit part is what this spell targets and is outside the scope of what I envisioned.

Well, since you were allowing a ton more PeMe than I was, this bodes well. I'll note that animals have minds, too. But if they don't have intelligent minds, then a lot of the value goes away. I have thought of developing a spell for a domesticated animal to forget its master, but I wouldn't waste any Animal vis on those Creo guidelines for an animal with Cunning.

I can see Mom/Arc rituals to create memories (since you generally don't want to do a ritual in front of someone.)

Just putting that out there as an idea for a way you can use it; I don't have any issue with the focus.

If you have Deft Mentem do you need words and gestures to do rituals?

I wouldn't personally allow it. I don't think you can do ceremonial/ritual methods without words/gestures, as I think doing those methods means you are using lots of words/gestures. I also don't allow a +1 for words nor for gestures with ceremonial/ritual casting for the same reason: I feel like it is already included in the method. However, I do worry about allowing the mute magus to still do them; I just haven't had to deal with that edge case.

As I've been working, I realize the style doesn't fit the Trianomae as well as it fits the Flambeau or maybe the Tytalus. I can move between Bonisagus and Flambeau trivially, just paying for Puissant Intrigue rather than paying for a Minor Magical Focus. House Flambeau will also fit other parts of the background better anyway.

Background

Childhood

Esti was born to Garaile and Katalin, a grog and a kitchen servant, respectively, at Aedes Mercurii on April 2, 1168. As a little child she scurried about the covenant with the other children and played as though she were a great warriors like her father. But as she was such a little girl, she couldn't keep up with the boys well; so she started taking the role of the maga in command, with them under her orders, and she had a natural aptitude for getting the boys to do what she wanted. Playing a maga suited her determination to rise to the top, even if she would never be one of those great magi her parents served. As she grew her intelligence was noticed, so training began for her to become a laboratory assistant and scribe, where being small would not hamper her. She learned to put a laboratory together and how to copy laboratory texts, and the magi grew to appreciate how organized she was, even if she was never a fast copyist.

Things changed drastically just before Esti turned 13, as it was then that her Gift emerged. Living at Aedes Mercurii the effects along with her turbulences were noticed immediately and celebrated, a much different reception than the Gift normally caused. As she had no Mercere blood in her past, Ophilio of Mercere passed on taking her as his apprentice. That left mostly the Flambeaux. She was secretly hoping Malfortis might take her. But after they examined her to find she was too small for much combat, had some minor difficulties with the elements, and was naturally talented with Mentem, Ricardus of Flambeau took her. Esti was a little worried, as Ricardus was not thought of as well as many of the others, but he was still a great Flambeau and she was excited to begin.

Apprenticeship

To her surprise, Ricardus was actually a particularly good fit. His sociability and interest in business suited her own talents. And having grown up in a covenant heavily influenced by House Mercere, Esti did not find Ricardus's lustful proclivities to be distasteful. As he was homosexual, he did not sleep with her, but he happily encouraged her to follow similar pursuits with the Redcaps, especially those of the Cult of Heroes since he knew they were always looking to procreate with the Gifted when possible. This resulted in her spending a good portion of her apprenticeship pregnant, which was not a problem for Ricardus since he needed a lab assistant and was training her to kill without being physical.

While Ricardus had been trained the School of Apromor, he was stronger in Creo and Mentem, and he wished to found his own school. Any school is most likely to start with an apprentice, so Esti became the first trained in the School of Ricardus within the Schools of Sebastian. To make sure she could handle herself as a true Flambeau, Ricardus trained Esti mostly to destroy minds with PeAn and PeMe while protecting herself with wards.

By the end of apprenticeship Esti had given birth to four children. The first was Bernardo, sired by Constantius of Mercere, born when she was 16. The second was Dario, sired by Crescent of Mercere, born when she was 18. The third was Elena, sired by Constantius of Mercere, born when she was 20. And the fourth was Rolando, sired by Zephyrinus, born when she was 21. Fortunately, Esti had her mother in the covenant to help raise all her children so they would never be too great a distraction from her apprenticeship, and Ricardus had her read a lot when she was less able to work. Even though none of her children seemed to be Gifted, they still bore Mercere blood as well as recent blood of a Gifted maga, so they were valued. Bernardo and Dario were already sent off through Harco to apprentice as Redcaps before Esti finished her apprenticeship.

For her gauntlet Esti was left locked up with a crowd of men about to be executed for rape, murder, and other crimes. Their executions were arranged to be delayed by Ricardus's agents, this way any deaths would be easily forgiven. Meanwhile, any Flambeau should be able to defeat such a force and escape a physical prison. Esti's formulaic spells warded her from the men while she quietly slew them, but she had to resort to spontaneous magic to handle the locks. After passing her gauntlet Esti switched to the name Mariana of Flambeau, associated with Diana in the practice of Aedes Mercurii, though to the Redcaps she had already become nicknamed as The Red Mother for her red hair and having given birth to several Redcaps in the making.

Characters

Bernardo: Mariana's first-born son, born June 9, 1184. He is nearing his gauntlet as a Redcap in the Roman Tribunal, training under his father Constantius. He has grown into a big, bold, young man.

Constantius of Mercere: He's an eternally plump and now a middle-aged Redcap in the Cult of Heroes. He fathered both Bernardo and Elena, and is now training Bernardo in the Roman Tribunal.

Crescens of Mercere: He's a hardworking, serious Redcap in the Cult of Heroes who spends much of his time further east looking for heroes reborn. He fathered Dario.

Dario: He is Mariana's second child, born December 12, 1186. He is the most sociable of his siblings and skilled with languages, and is now more than halfway through his Redcap apprenticeship in the Levant Tribunal.

Elena: Mariana's only daughter and third child, born September 17, 1188, and the one she bonded most closely with. She is about halfway through her apprenticeship as a Redcap in the Provençal Tribunal, having started a few years after Mariana's gauntlet. She has grown into a confident and inquisitive young woman.

Garaile: He was Mariana's father, a shield grog at Aedes Mercurii until he died in 1198.

Katalin: She is Mariana's mother and kitchen maid at Aedes Mercurii, having returned full-time to the kitchens now that Mariana's children are grown enough to be in their apprenticeships.

Ricardus of Flambeau: Mariana's parens at Aedes Mercurii. See F&F p.85.

Rolando: Feb 1189 He is Mariana's youngest child, born February 4, 1189. He started his apprenticeship as a Redcap just after Elena did, so he started a bit young but not overly so. He is noticeably smaller and less social than his older brothers, but he is clever.

Zephyrinus of Mercere: He's a younger, excited, and fleet-of-foot Redcap in the Cult of Heroes working in the Normandy Tribunal, known for running races in the tournaments. He fathered Rolando.

I need to figure out the language around Aedes Mercurii - Found it: Basque has withdrawn to about Pau and Lourdes, but it still stretches a little further east south of Lourdes, so the covenant is solidly in the Basque region. (I should go with a Basque birth name then.) And there is a new spell (or pair of spells) at the bottom.

But a Shell of What He Once Was (PeMe 40)
These are basically the same spell, one targeting an intelligent mind and one targeting an animal mind (which I believe still uses Size, so up to a Size +1 animal). Base 25 + 3 Sight. This spell destroys the target's mind, leaving behind only a mindless husk, if the target fails a Stamina stress roll of 15+.

Nowadays that would not be permitted. Imagine exposing a pregnant woman to mercury and other chemicals in the lab? Where's the Guernicus? Lawsuit!

This shows some callousness and disregard towards human life, but that's not typical of the period historically.

Will be interesting to see how that affects her personality traits.

I thought you were going for the mundane relationship spot and the Gentle Gift? Mental control is not quite the same... particularly when dealing with mundane allies. Just wondering.

Also, having a magus know two custom made level 40 spells that fall in their Magical Focus (which their pater does not share) right after Gauntlet seems a bit over the top...

OK. I can drop the Animal one, Mentem being one of the parens' major things.

As for Gentle Gift, I'm still doing much of the same background stuff (children with Mercere) and path (Matres & Matrones) without getting sidetracked by all sorts of Verditius stuff simultaneous with alchemy.

Yes, some callousness. Of course, they were all sentenced to die already. A bunch being rapists also fits with where she's headed with Matres & Matrones.

I made some adjustments, dropping both those high-level spells. I'll have her invent those later, fitting for her ambitious nature; and then they're unique to her. I moved points from Animal to Corpus to more closely match her parens' best Arts. She can still complete the same gauntlet by putting all her opponents to sleep.

What age is she at Gauntlet?

I'm getting her total xp (excluding native language) at 505 (Abilities 230, Arts 245, Masteries 30).

Early childhood is 45, apprenticeship is 240 and Skilled Parens 60. That leaves 160. If she started her apprenticeship at 13, this should be 195, so I think something's off (or maybe I'm kust missing something somewhere).

What will be her role for the covenant?

Oops, meant to write 27, so apprenticeship at 12. You missed Arcane Lore, but I think something is still off a little. With Arcane Lore it should be:

Childhood 45 + Youth 15x7 + Apprenticeship 240 + Skilled Parens 60 + Arcane Lore 50 = 500.

My counts:
Abilities 240
Arts 230
Spell Mastery 30

I think you counted Mentem as 45 rather than 30 (due to Affinity), which makes your Arts total off by 15. I accidentally had Folk Ken 2 listed as 5 rather than 15, which is where the undercount on Abilities comes from; I fixed that. So it looks like the total is correct for starting apprenticeship at age 12.

To make things easier, we should post ages (mundane and years post-Gauntlet) whenever we post stats. Makes accounting easier!

Yes. I'd remembered to do it before and forgotten this time around.

She seems a bit... underwhelming... stats-wise, for her role as mundane ambassador/relationships. Without a Gentle Gift and with fairly low social Abilities, how well will she perform with mundanes?

Sure, she can probably manipulate them with ReMe magic, but that isn't so useful in making and keeping mundane allies. (Edit: I guess that depends on how strongly the others will enforce the negative effects of the Gift.)

This is an interesting character, and I hate to sound like I'm (again) criticizing, but she is barely better than Clusius himself for dealing with (friendly or neutral) mundanes. Is mundane relations the right role for her? :upside_down_face:

I built her to join Matres & Matrones. I realize I've mentioned that, but you may not know it. One of their first initiations is the Gentle Gift. On top of that she's got Natural Leader and Puissant Intrigue. Meanwhile, she's got Deft Mentem along with a great Mentem score to be able to do all sorts of Mentem stuff to manipulate people or read their minds. She's going to get sidetracked a bit with service/adventure along the way, but she'll still be really good by game start. One of the things I like compared to the other is that I can waste a couple years with just fun background and still be able to do her stuff.

I hadn't realized that the mystery cult would initiate Gentle Gift. That explains it. :+1:

Are you able to change the name on the stats thread, or should a new thread be made and that one be deleted after I transfer I couple things like formatting a spell descriptions?

Done, name changed to Mariana of Flambeau.

Thanks.

End of Apprenticeship (spring 1195)

Being one of the few to swear the Oath of Hermes at a Grand Tribunal was an honor not lost on Mariana. She enjoyed her status and freedom and got to know as many magi as possible. On top of the general socializing, Hannah was able to reunite with the Redcap parents of her children, most of whom she had not seen in several years.

Unlike most the other apprentices just promoted, Mariana was not looking for a new home. The Cult of Mercury and the Cult of Heroes had plans for her, and she was aware of that. She knew she would remain at Aedes Mercurii for quite a while and was happy about that. But she would also have to work for the covenant to earn her junior membership there.

The Mercere Portal made returning from the Grand Tribunal trivial and gave her enough time to move into one of Aedes Mercurii's many abandoned labs. Mariana chose one that appealed to her, as it was well-organized, even if it had been partially gutted to move supplies to other labs (Aura 5, -3 Basic, +1 Highly Organized = +3, just flavor on how it comes about).

.

Serving the Covenant (summer 1195, 1st season after apprenticeship)

Right away Mariana was put to work for the covenant to earn her keep. In her first seasons she was slower with the vis sources and stores, as she had to familiarize herself with them as well as maintaining them. The difficulty varied for her. For instance, being able to fly made catching the mountain-peak wind in a bottle for Auram vis fairly straightforward. But milking a special Pyrenean ibex proved tricky because it reacted poorly to her Gift and she lacked specific training with Animal to help her deal with the situation. While all this kept her busy, it also left plenty of room in her schedule to look after her two youngest children, including celebrating Elena's seventh birthday just before the end of the season. Fortunately she was naturally talented enough with Parma Magica that she was able to shield both of her children from the Gift's effects already, making for much better family time.

Meanwhile the leadership of Cult of Heroes was getting its plans underway for her, making sure the needed resources were available. Ophilio of Mercere, the High Priest of Mercury, directed things. The goal was to take advantage of Mariana's talents with Mentem. It wasn't a secret from her. She already knowingly participated in the Cult of Heroes and House Mercere's plans, giving birth to several children with Redcaps. The Cult of Mercury was also the religion she'd grown up with. So she looked forward to doing more with them.

Beginning Preparing to Cast Rituals (autumn 1195, 2nd season after apprenticeship)

Midius of Flambeau, on behalf of Ophilia, provided Mariana with the covenant's copy of Genesis Magica by Yannis ex Jerbiton (Creo Summa L14 Q15), instructing her to study it closely for several seasons, and that she would receive more instructions later. As Ophilia's second in command, instructions coming from Midius were not surprising; and knowing they wanted her trained for their rituals, working on Creo wasn't surprising, either. So Mariana dutifully set to work studying.

As studying didn't take her abroad so much, Mariana had notably more time at the covenant. Mostly that allowed her to dote on her two youngest children. But the covenant had an interesting, long-term visitor as well. Celerius of Mercere had spent most of his time in Iberia, but he was currently moving things between Iberia and the rest of the Tribunal. Being on the edge of the Provençal Tribunal and having a Mercere Portal made Aedes Mercurii an ideal location to be based at. To Mariana he was a handsome man with some flare and stories from exotic lands. Thus began a hot and heavy affair that would never lead to more children, as Celerius had received his first Longevity Ritual four years earlier.

Continuing Her Studies (winter 1195, 3rd season after apprenticeship)

Mariana continue her intense study of Genesis Magica by Yannis ex Jerbiton (Creo Summa L14 Q15). From discussions with Midius of Flambeau she knew they wanted her casting powerful Mentem rituals she was currently unprepared to manage. While excited, her ambition drove her to delve deeply much more than her excitement did. Not only would she be able to achieve a higher position within the Cults, but she could also use her Creo Mentem training to further her own ends elsewhere.

Mariana continued to spend time with her family, celebrating Rolando's sixth birthday. Her steamy affair with Celerius continued as well. Mariana received her first pawn of covenant disbursement at the end of the year, only one pawn because she was so low ranking. Overall these felt like very good times, advancing herself while having time to be a mother and being able to enjoy life's pleasures.
