Generally speaking, you are right. However, an ingenious magus can often bypass these issues.
For example, with a modest level of Imaginem he can have an illusion (e.g. of himself running in circles) keeping the giant(s) occupied, while he invisibly traces a wide circle around the scene.

Or he can change into something that is a cricle, say, 30 paces in diameter, and then he can draw a circle where he is with very little movement. A 200-ton, 110-pace long giant snake biting its tail in the shape of a circle can draw a 30-pace diameter circle on the ground almost without moving, just by wiggling a bit. And I can picture a Flambeau becoming a circular curtain of flame with MuCo(Ig), and then burning the circle into the ground!
