General Table Talk

Malik is Arabic for King. The Arc of Fire was his dominion, just South of the City of Brass. He was deposed by his cousin when he was "dead". He is likely of the Magic or Infernal realm. I gave a rundown of his known powers in the main story thread (lots of Ignem, size and shape changing, conjuration, etceteras).

Long ago, Antonio had seemingly killed this Efreet, draining all of it's energy as Ignem vis. Years later, while using this exact same vis, Antonio botched and the result was that Khyron reconstituted himself. They were in a battle against a giant known a Humberto the Huge. Khyron killed the giant and fled. Alberto, the older cousin giant, has resented Andorra ever since. Khyron returned home to find that his dominion had been overthrown and claimed by his own cousin, and he blames Adorra for this.

Was there an original reason for him and covenant not to get along? I can understand why he might be mad about losing his fief while he was 'dead' as you put it... very easily something that would make one mad. But why were he and Antonio fighting to begin with? Is he a 'neerdowell' or did they have some kind of conflicting interest at the time?

Is his cousin more / less / same as he is on the powerlevel scale?

Good question!
Unfortunately, Antonio isn't here. I removed him on purpose.

But there is someone who may know. It is that brave little man fighting for his live against this monster.

Vortigern, you may create a companion character and get into this scene if you want. The companion need not be tied to your magus. Just a "companion level" character.

If Malik is considered an infernal creature, Octavian has some vim vis as well as Demon's eternal oblivion level 10. A possible strategy is while the efreet is fighting the custos, Octavian can slip close enough with invisibility, try casting the spell while it is distracted in the middle of the fray, to test the results.

That is a good idea! Mix in with the Custos and they will advance you close to the creature, you break off and do your thing. Even if you are not successful (wrong realm or low penetration), it is still a momentary distraction that can proove advantageous.

Personally I'd be rather afraid of confronting a spirit as powerful as Khyron without being rather specifically prepared. He is powerful enough that I could see him having some rather enormous penetration on some of his powers. That and combined with his physical stature... and I'd probably want a company of crossbowmen and similar contingent of spirits before I'd be willing to engage.

But then... Ludo isn't a combat magus. If he was I might feel differently.

LOL, I see your point. Comb your hair and it won't show (nyuck nyuck). We have no crossbow men or archers. We have javalins though! Our men are mainly trained in small unit tactics centered on a magus; the Wizard's Lance. Though many have competant cavalry skills, we don't maintain them as heavy cavalry. Flexability and multi-utility is their main strength.

I wouldn't worry abought Khyron's Penetration. Unless he happens to have a high Penetration ability score that is, &/or gasp an Arcane Connection.

(yes, you may start worrying now)

So this efreet is size five, which means about 5 meters tall?

I had hoped the barrels could do some damage!?

  1. because water is against its nature
  2. even at size 5 getting hit by sth that weighs about 160 kg should have some effect. To calculate this for human size:
If a human sized being gets hit by a 60 litre barrel filled with a toxic substance that falls from the sky, it should have some effect (it's a shame the frequency of fire isn't higher)
  3. There is nothing magical about the attack so I don't care about magic resistance at all.

Do not despair! It is a good idea, Carmen just thinks it is cute. I am not sure how tall a meter is, around a Yard I think (one pace). Size +5 is somewhere around 30 feet tall I figure (10 meters?). Water isn't nesecarilly against its nature/toxic. All Genies are composed of smokeless flame, but also associate with another element. In the case of an Efreet it is Igmen, for Djinn Auram, Marid Aquam and Dao Terram. Ghuls, Jann, and Shaytans are Corpus I think. Still, he drinks water, water is not toxic. It will put out his fires and dampen (lol) his fiery aura he is manifesting at the moment. The heavy barrel falling on him can have an effect as well. It will hurt, but not on the scale you are imagining (he is nearly 100 times the mass of a normal human).

Concerning the Andorran Guard

This seems like an opportune time to discuss and develop the concept, and I am open to input from any of you. I know little about actual military structure in the middle ages. I am just good at making stuff up.

I am obligated to stick to what I said. All total there are fifty members of the Andorran Guard. And I lied when I said we had no archers or crossbowmen. These guys choose their weapons as they will according to their preference. We don’t have a singular organized unit of missile weapons though. We have snipers

You can basically draw a “Lance” of a number of men equal to 3 + your Presence + Leadership, minus the penalties for your Gift, and configure them any way you want. If you want something bizarre like 6 men specialized in fighting while swinging on ropes, I’ll kibosh that. You want 3 heavy cavalry and 3 crossbowmen, that’s more feasible. But that’s when outfitting them ahead of time. In an emergency like this, each guy is going to put on his favorite armour, grab his favorite weapon, put on their tunic/cape/cloak bearing the crest of Andorra (featuring a Griffon grappling with a Dragon), and get their asses in gear! Guards on guard duty are already armed with whatever they usually wear.

Out of fifty, this includes the Captain, Herald, and two specialized scouts. As far as experience and specialized function for the rest goes, I am thinking that the can be broken down into general groups.

Seven Champion Elite (7): The seven absolute best guys are afforded this status. They are all officers, though they hold no command, and they answer only to Alexandro and to the magi (with varying degrees of importance). These guys may be of any age if on longevity, and this would also be a good spot to fit a Mythic Companion character into . The whole rigmarole I gave about their swords, shields, and shoes; that’s exaggerated. They are equipped magically in various ways (within limits), but they all do wear magic shoes/boots that they can use to Wizard’s Leap.

Home Guard (10): These guys are settled in with families, or just retired from adventuring. They are mainly older guys, in their 40’s and higher (the oldest one is Moses Mendez, age 57, the top bailiff or whatever his title would be). They maintain the watch and train the younger guys. Most of them are on longevity, and really have no aging effects. They are just the home guard. Someone has to do it. One or two of these guys may be a strange specialist that is only rarely assigned on expeditions (one Grog has Second Sight; he is usually the one who inspects all visitors at the gate but he is useful for exploring regios). Some may have gained a lot of warping from exposure to magical forces during their adventures.

Red Guard (6): Here is the secret truth about the Mercere Quarter. Rodrigo established the Quarter as a way to get money and vis resources out of House Mercere to fund the growth of the covenant. As part of the deal, Andorra is obligated to provide security for the Mercere Quarter. Six custos are assigned to the Quarter, rotating in then out for a short term, one or two serving with regularity. They normally are under the direct command of the head Mercere magus, but in times of crisis they fall into the regular chain of command.

Veterans and Greens (24+): The rest of the troops are a mix of Veteran, Regular, and Green Troops. This is according to our standards. We recruit warriors who are already veterans, having already fought in one or more battles in their life. However, we consider them green until the have supernatural experience. Things are leaning a little towards the green lately. Well, this encounter will be an experience for them. Carmen is right to accuse her father of getting lazy. These men need to be taken out on expeditions and trained to deal with the supernatural. I would say half are totally green, a third are regulars, and the rest are true veterans (turb sergeants).

It sounds like we don't have much in the way of a military force insofar as being able to do violence on a large(ish) scale ... like raiding an enemy village/city/covenant or some such, but we have a very good force for equiping our magi with custom groups of men at arms for small skirmishes and adventuring. Is my assessment basically what you have in mind?

Oh, and while I'm at it... should I expect a lot of resistance to Ludo wanting to join the covenant?

Do not mistake the characters' unwillingness - I as a player am glad to welcome you - but I won't say so.

Mark, that number works out to 0 (or less) for a lot of magi.

Scott

With a minimum of two then :stuck_out_tongue:

You are correct. It is possible to equip them all as infantry or light cavalry (except we only have about 20 or 30 horses), and all of these men are indeed experienced at fighting in larger units. However, it has always been my experience that an army doesn't really meet the needs of a magus. Specialized troops for skirmishes and adventures fits better.

Unless your Magus likes armies.

I suddenly have an image in mind of a Roman Mercurian marching around with a legion in accompaniment, randomly ransacking gaulish barbarian shaman's vis and stuff.

I suddenly have an image of a Roman Mercurian getting Wizard Marched for disrupting local politics and economics. All the while, the subtle Flambeau magus mixes into an already existing army with his small unit of four horsemen, they assist the King of Navarre in breaking through the enemy lines, and then are free to plunder vis from Marabouts and Sahirs without the Q's even bothering to look twice.

By Roman Mercurian I actually meant 'Roman' and 'Mercurian' in the literal sense. But that is ok.

Oh!
Well, that is much-much different

I have been busy this last while, and it looks to be getting worse before it gets better. I am following as best I can. Looks like things are about to get busy, so I’ll try to keep on it these next few days. Alas, I don’t have more time right now to micromanage my actions, so I’m keeping it vague so it will fit with whatever you all have in mind. Let's kick some butt.
