General Table Talk

I would be in favor of this.

To be honest, that was my interpretation of the main rulebook RAW before Realms of Power: Magic muddies the waters.

My preferred solution would be something like:

  • No penalty for exposure, in seasons that they spend with their Magus and in which both Familiar and Magus gain Exposure.
  • No penalty for XP gained in Adventure, on adventures that they share with their Maga.
  • A Familiar may Practice a skill, if they're in the presence of their Magus for the Season. Example: Sciurus, the simian Familiar of Petros the Odd, spends a season with his Magus exploring the woods of Styria looking (in vain) for a new vis source. Petros applies his Practice points to Area Lore, while Sciurus applies his to the local language.
  • A Familiar may be Taught or Trained by their magus (not necessarily one-on-one, for Teaching), without penalty.
  • A literate Familiar may study from a book without penalty, as long as she studies in the presence of her Maga. (Torn as to whether she needs to be studying, also, or can be doing other stuff in the lab as well. I'm leaning toward both studying.)

Just some back-of-napkin ideas.

What season shall we earmark for finding then binding? I'm getting around to planning my next few years... I think I'll want to boost my CrCo for Longevity, as well as potentially boosting ReMe for optimal familiar bonding.

Just to let everyone know, I am falling behind (again), but will catch up soon. I am in the midst of moving this week.
However, I got it hooked up with new laptop (thank you JL), and will have WiFi at the new pad so I can get more involved once again like I used to be.
Patience

Poke?

On that note, did you want someone else to play/make the familiar?

Make, certainly, as I lack the relevant books. Marko offered, but I know he's snowed under.

People round here seem to play their own familiars, which is a status quo I'm happy to persist.

Keep in mind that both Fleur and Lucas are pretty good with CrCo. Each can top 50 LT, and I know Lucas would be happy to trade a season of devising a LR for a season of Antoine crafting. (I suspect Fleur would as well.)

Trading a season for a Longevity Ritual is a great thing to do if you don't want to focus on Corpus and/or Creo.
Don't forget that since you must be present you have the option of assisting with your Longevity Ritual (if their Leadership can handle you and their familiar if they have one) your Int+Magic Theory (Inventive Genius if you have it) would add to their Lab total, often boosting the magnitude by the ritual by at least 1. Also, if you and on a 10 or 5 for the lab total, and the magic theory score of the lead magus allows, don't forget to add another pawn of vis to increase the magnitude of the ritual by one more level, since the magnitude is Level/5, rounded up. If it isn't possible or worth adding yourself as an assistant to your own longevity ritual, you can probably read a book during the season your LR is being developed.

Now that Jonathan mentions it, Lucas would be willing to devise a LR for Antoine in exchange for Antoine helping him in the lab for devising an improved LR for himself. With a everyone helping and a little extra vis, we might be able to get it to Magnitude 15.

Cecilio could lend her corpus items as well. That might increase it by just a little extra.

He managed to get you one? This is so kind! Thanks!

What year are you wanting to get your LR redone? Fleur is wanting to get a talisman made soon after 1241...

What does a talisman have to do with a LR? Talismans don't add to lab totals.

Eats up a lot of time. You could also add effects designed to help in lab.

It has to do with trading lab time as assistants.

Many fabulous suggestions!

Antoine is already aging - and even picked up a decrepitude point in Winter 1238 - so he'd like his LR soon. OTOH, he also wants another kid. So I'm thinking he has a boy in Winter 1239 then goes on LR soon after. That may be a bit early to trade against Fleur wanting a talisman in 1241, but may be OK for Lucas. In any case, Antoine would probably try to get an LR for Isolde as well, which he'd trade another season for; that one could be Fleur. Both have the same CrCo total - nifty! Although I think Horus puts Lucas just ahead of Fleur's Felicia.

Do note that a Verdi helping with a Talisman isn't as useful as it could be, because some of the benefits don't apply to items opened by other magi (I'm not clear which).

It makes sense to get the familiar done first, since hopefully that will improve LT, and will also assist with aging rolls (I think? Or does the Bronze Cord only apply to Crisis rolls?). In terms of arts-raising, reading up on Rego for 3 seasons and Mentem for 2 will get both to 10, which is nice. Antoine is currently unassigned from Autumn 1237. I assume finding and binding the familiar will be separate seasons.

So, planning out, how about:

1237:
Autumn - Read "Divine Authority" (Re)

1238:
Winter - Read "Divine Authority"
Spring - Read "Eye of Aggamatto" (Me)
Summer - Read "Divine Authority"
Autumn - Read "Eye of Aggamatto"

1239:
Winter - free (no-one likes travelling in Winter  ); perhaps the reciprocal season of helping Lucas?
Spring - Search for familiar (adventure, if someone will run one)
Summer - Bind familiar
Autumn - Create LR

... then free again until Spring 1241 (assisting Arachne). So two seasons around then for Isolde's LR, and helping Fleur in return.

On another note, just as we have a Magi Planner and a Companion Planner, would it be worth having a Book Planner, so we can see if a given tome is available?

I hadn't realized you were going for the LR that early. I thought you were talking 1242. 1239 is before I have an apprentice, so my LT goes down by how much she would help. I can still get to 13th magnitude, though. Now I just need to find a way to squeeze in an extra season... (that is assuming you wanted Lucas to do your LR).

Actually, I'm pretty sure if you assist in the lab your virtues can apply. And I'm almost positive you can carve the runes into the item, so other people can claim the material/shape from them.

I'm also trying to write up a potential monkey familiar, and I would be happy to try and run an adventure for you and said monkey.

Ah, yes, you two are booked up aren't you? I guess I could delay (especially if a familiar does benefit the normal aging roll, as I suspect). Of course, Antoine brings a +13 LT bonus which will help (+1 extra Creo in his own lab).

But yeah, I could push back, given a monkey.

Hm, I'm not sure; the rules say that the Runes are the result of shaping the raw materials during the process of opening the item; but I think a talisman's owner has to do that bit themselves.
In any case, thank you for my monkey .
