OOC: characters and covenant discussions

The Hubris and Vendetta stuff that makes them all dwarven smiths from LotR. It's still better than Criamon though.

Yah man I read one sentence of HoH:MC Criamon... and wanted to throw the book in the garbage, whoever wrote Criamon have no clue about philosophy, religion, or basic understanding of infinity.

If the universe repeats itself exactly then it's in harmony. Notice the complete lack of rejoicing that there is infinite joy? After 500 years of sitting in a cave, in Socrates allegory this is in ignorance, there has got to be a schism. They are sitting in a literal Cave of Shadows. Hypnostasis is the sediment in urine, which is appropriate more for the house description not for Life, which the house hates. Apt action and all that, Vedic proto-buddhism, which was in Greece around what 500-400bce. Vedic scholars get astrology from the Greeks around the same time.

Empedocles makes sense and is readable, Plato's Timaeus is at least comprehensible... but Criamon? I can't read it. Don't know why we can't create a path...

Verditius don't play well together and the greater their hubris trait, which increases as they make and sell items, the more likely they are to develop a vendetta with another Verditius. Best option is to only have one per covenant so he has no one to argue with who won't just tell him to stop being an ar*e - lol

Yup "dwarven smith". Why they would sell items is beyond me. Also their items of Quality should be magical and resisted. +4 sword is the worst addition to the game, ok second worse since Criamon are the Dominus Maximus.

Because vis is nice and means they can make even more items, which is even better. Also they like opulent living because they deserve it (hubris) so silver is nice as well!

Yah, but why spend a seasion slaving for no reason. Sell a pawn of Vis for silver and you'll live like a noble for a few decades. Money and selling items seems a bit low of aspirations to have. So why the hubris? They aren't doing anything great or interesting.

No way Items of Quality is the best thing ever (if you are a Verditius) and should never be resisted. Anyway it won't matter because once I learn that mystery I will be enchanting the items post bringing out their inner loveliness. Exceptional swords, with their qualities brought out with a nice enchantment or seven on it. Kings start queing up please, you know you all want one. By the way he will not be a Dwarf - lol

You don't think it is great or interesting but the Verditius do. They think they are doing the most interesting thing in the world because items are permanent expressions of the magical arts. That is the whole point of hubris, it makes them more and more self centred and delusional about how great they really are.

It's like being an engineer and getting excited about selling model cars for baseball cards because you deserve the baseball cards.

One Vis sold directly for coin is far more than an item of quality will get. Also, it's Magic. It's intentionally broken to make Verditius broken. The +4 sword is equivalent of Excalibur. A novice swordsman with a 1 skill, 5 xp, gains 70 xp of a bonus. 5 full years training.

A guy with that five years of training picks it up and gains about 150xp, about 10 years of dedicated training. Yah that's totally balanced.

Um no. Just because the book says they do something inane and retarded doesn't mean it makes sense for them to do so.

Deleted unproductive rant misplaced emotionally disfunction

For my companion, I am drawn to the idea of a mercenary captain. Might the covenant have hired a small company for protection? For his personality, I was thinking of a jovial, Fallstaff-type, somewhat lazy and lecherous, but with a sense of honour and good in a fight.

And for the magus, I think I will go with my Dwarf Flambeau Terram specialist. I realize that both are combat-oriented, but in quite different ways. Any objections?

Just as well I want to play a Verditius and you don't then. Just because you think it is wrong does not make it so Mr Rex. I like what the book says and I intend to play it that way so stink off mc stink stink as we say round here when we are being nice - hehehe.

I'm just a hater of all things. Especially on Wednesdays.

I want to make story not play excel extravaganza. Sorry to be pooper.

First things first, characters.

Ouch, thats gimping him too much. Are you sure you want to play that kind of Magus? He sounds more like an exceptional crafter than a mage at this point. Convince me

I am fine with the lone Verditius, make the draft. I am going to post something on Items of Quality below though, read it.

Great, lets see the draft.

Yes, you will need: a) to spend the required time, b) to spend vis ( and this will be an interesting thing. As you will see later, starting magi will have some vis, but there will be consequences spending it before joining. I know this sounds cryptic, so please design your character not dependent on that familiar)

This is from my character creation guidelines.

As a player/ST idea, go for it. In story, what 'contract' or payment your character will negotiate is up to player character and NPC interaction. How many people will that band be? (we will need to discuss this). Bottom line, go for it.

Go for it, no problem with military might. I do hope its dwarf as in small and not fae dwarf though? Please make the draft.

Great! For the Dwarf, yes, size small. Likely taking the flaws as a Greater Malediction as the result of meddling in the affairs of the fey. Still toying with the backstory.

As for the mercenary, I was looking the Social Status Virtue that suggests a small company of 5-10, so something like that. The character himself I imagine as a former bandit who has gone legit, but maybe bringing a few former associates along with him.

(ST EDIT): 5 is fine, more than 5 the covenant wont be able to afford them, 10 is out of the question. Story-wise, they will be under your character's leadership and control. Player-wise you won't control them, any player can play a merc grog during a story. Ok?

(Player EDIT): Sounds good! I will work out some of their details in the character thread.

Have they ever fought with and/or against sir Ronald?
What I am really asking is, have you decided on their battle history at all?
Do they have any allegiance (religious or otherwise) or do they literally fight for whomever pays?

Just asking ... and looking for potential constructive and destructive links

Both options could be good! Me and the boys (name TBD) aren't particularly religious, likely local, at least to Greece, but do fight with a certain degree of honour. Maybe he crossed paths/swords with Ronald a few years ago, while still engaged in banditry?

Naturally, Ronald has the utmost respect for all those who have come to a crossroads in their life, and decided to change their ways

I have questions about the campaign though. I'm trying to make a character that fits, but I can't do that, if you won't explain things. I could make a partial skeleton, but I can't make full draft, when I don't know the answer to important questions. Do you want me to fire up a thread and put down what I can, and we talk more there?

(ST EDIT): Please make a draft/skeleton. Make a thread and ask stuff that would be nice.

Umm... can you explain this a little more? What consequences? How much vis can we use in character creation? Also, what aura should we assume for post-Gauntlet character creation? Can I spend a year post gauntlet to make a familiar bond?

(ST EDIT)I intend to give starting characters some Build Points for sumas, Tractus and vis. While these are gifts from their Parnes, they are meant to go to the covenant not to the character. You will use those vis to make the familiar, which means you will have less to gift the covenant, hence some consequences. Assume the Aura is a generic 3. OR choose a covenant your character hails from, of an Aura no more than 5. The covenant must been published in an official book (not online or subrosa etc). Are you ok with that? You can spend 0-2 years if you deem the familiar that important, I can give that much leeway to characters.

Yeah, I know. I still think its a bit silly to take a flaw only to get it replaced as soon as the character gets a decent lab. Also a bit weird to have a new flaw coincidentally suddenly appear when you complete that first lab project.
Also I had another question:

Look, I want to create a character that fits the campaign and will be fun to play. Its not fun to get shafted right off the bat on something that is critically important like a magus's lab unexpectedly. At the very least, if I'm making a character who has a reason to come to this place I need to know what the general terms the character is being offered. If the terms really are "No promise of lab, no mention of worked required, no mention of if you'll get room/board or any other details.", that is possible, to make a character who would go for that, but I still need to know the terms. Is sufficient lab space being offered? Is basic lodgings and food being offered? Any mention of the expectations?

(ST EDIT) :S so impatient. I still haven't heard from all players, guess I will have to start the charter part earlier since you insist.
Player wise, I did not expect 8 people to join. I cautioned the last three (ioke, T Rexes friend and Solon) that they would probably have to stay outside the main building, as first come, first served
Characterwise, the Order imposed some clauses in order to approve the creation of the Covenant. They did it so that they could halt or postpone the creation, but Anastaj and Christoforos agreed anyway. I will post the requirements in the Covenant section today
