Serenissima Obscura – The Magical Renaissance

Salve sodales — Allow me to introduce Serenissima Obscura

My name is Melina Sedó, and Ars Magica was the first RPG I played in 1992. The depth and beauty of Mythic Europe — a world where real history intertwines with magic — has profoundly shaped my creative path. I have translated the 4th edition of Ars Magica into German and my co-writer has translated the 2nd edition a few years earlier. Together, we have been running an Ars Magica campaign – set in the 15th century – for more than a decade.

Today, I’m excited to share with you Serenissima Obscura, a dark fantasy setting and adventure series currently live on Backerkit. The project is set in a Magical Renaissance version of Italy, in the year 1507, building on the same foundation that makes Ars Magica so compelling: a real historical world, but with magic as a true and hidden force shaping events behind the scenes.

The heart of the setting is Venice, both the radiant republic and its shadowed reflection — a place where masks, miracles, curses, and conspiracies converge.

While the core book is system-agnostic and has stats for DnD 5e (long story!), we’re adding a dedicated Ars Magica Guide for Serenissima Obscura, designed to let you seamlessly integrate Serenissima into your sagas. We’ve already funded (in less than 48 hours — thank you, Ars Magica fans!), and we’re now working toward our Ars Magica community goal: if we reach 200 copies, the book will be printed in high-quality offset. We’re already at 91 copies claimed!

If you’re curious, I’d be honored if you’d take a look at the project — and I’d love to hear your thoughts, ideas, and questions about how it might connect with your sagas.

Thank you all for years of inspiration, debate, and deep magical lore. I hope Serenissima Obscura will be a worthy contribution to this grand tradition.

I've been super excited for this project as it's been discussed. I backed it early, and I really hope that the project can continue to grow and meet some of the stretch goals!

Thank you for backing us!

I'll add that Melina has been super engaged with the community (over on Discord) to figure out how to best fit the story in the Ars Magica universe. This is going to be a lot of fun and an awesome piece of content for Ars Magica.

We are getting content really thought out for the Ars Magica paradigm. I could even argue Serenissima Obscura vision is much closer to Ars than the other system, so this is kind of an Ars first story.

Thank you! Ars Magica was my first love and has shaped how I define roleplaying.

I absolutely adore this idea. I always wanted to see a Renaissance Ars Magica, since so many ideas of the Ordo appear in the mundane. So much interesting conflicts and relations.

I would like to hear what the mages think of Colombus' journey, or the fall of Constantinople, or Rodrigo Borgia.

Thank you!
The Ars Magica Guide will contain a history of the order until 1507 and ideas about how different factions in the order deal with the political situation in the Magical Renaissance.
The "discovery" of the Americas will play a role, as does the position of the Church towards magic.

Note:
In my Ars Magica world – shaped in the early 90s – the order and magic was always in full hiding from society and the church, as was everyone with fae blood or with supernatural powers. My first book (for 5e) is also based on the assumption. No mage would ever show his powers in public and no human with fae blood would ever admit to that. Even the DnD version of our books is based on such principles.
However: an "alternative history" - the Magical Renaissance – is created when the leader of Florence, Lorenzo de’ Medici, does not die in 1492. In this world, magicians and humans with special powers make baby steps into the light of of society. Carefully...

Here is a part of our chronology:

1492
Florence: A group of Florentine citizens uncover a heinous plot to assassinate Lorenzo de’ Medici and the Magnificent is healed by Divine intervention. It is said that his saviors had to go through Heaven and Hell to uncover a plot and find the instrument by which they could conquer the forces of Hell. (Events from "The Straight Way Lost", our first book.) News breaks that they used powerful magics and were supported by brave individuals from non-human lineages that have long shared the earth with mankind. Before this revelation, non-humans had been hiding for ages and only "white magic" through divine intervention was officially accepted. Now, society has to absorb this news.

An excerpt of our detailed chapter about how different parts of the society react to such news and how factions in the world build.

Reaction of the Catholic Church:
Most higher Church officials had already known about the existence of other species, and there have always been individuals with fae-blood within the ranks of the church.
This – and the fact that the Church would not want to be believed as ignorant – leads to a very fast official reaction by the Pope. On January 1, 1493, the newly elected Pope Alexander VI, Rodrigo Borgia, issues the papal bull "Sunt aliae gentes" which declares that there was never a doubt about the existence of other species, but that a great confusion has overcome some members of the flock. This is why the Church elaborates that God loves all of his children and that all who obey Christian dogma are allowed to enter Paradise. The letter also assures that humans hold a special place in God’s kingdom, as they are his firstborn on earth.
This papal bull does not go unopposed, in particular as it comes from a widely unpopular Spanish Pope. Many amongst the higher ranks protest, but Borgia silences them with bribes or threats. There are, however, a few fractions opposed to the equal status of non-human-species. Read the section about the religious orders below.
When Alexander dies in 1503, he is followed by Francesco Todeschini Piccolomini, who styles himself Pius III. The nephew of the pious and educated Pius II is a half-elf (DnD) of a renowned noble family, and openly declares his family-connections after the papal bull is published.
Only a few weeks after his election, there is an attempt on his life. Some say, that the mighty Cardinal Francesco della Rovere conspired with the Puri to take the office for himself. Others believe that the Dominican order is behind this poisoning. Since then, Pius is never seen without his personal guards, a taster and his private physician – who is suspected to be a magical healer.

So... this is part of our official history in the main book.
In the Ars Magica conversion guide, we will discuss alternative views or way how the order will react to such news and how it might change the order. (That is already changed from its medieval form on which we also will offer views.)
But: these will always only be options: Every SG can decide to open the society to more or less magic.

I wonder if there are any changes or shifts in the Houses (like certain may die out and others get founded or merged). Or if there were any great events or happenings.

Oh, yes, there definitely were. As we are going to work on that part after the campaign closes, I cannot yet give you so many details, but here are some of my thoughts:

  • The plague has decimated the order as it has humankind in general, which has caused a europe-wide closing of covenants.
  • The Houses Jerbiton and Jerbiton will have risen to great importance with the growth of cities all over Europe.
  • The same development drives the houses Bjornaer, Merinita and Ex Miscellanea away from the densely populated areas and separates them from the other houses. House Ex Miscellanea comes under the scrutiny of the Roman church as the inquisition shifts their attention from heresy to witchcraft.
  • There might have been a schism in the 15th century, but I am thinking that the emergence of magic and non-humans will lead to discussions about a re-unification.
  • I however think, that the order as a whole has not yet come out of hiding after magic was officially recognised by some heads of state. They are still cautious and wary about the political changes.

... much, much more to come!

Is this supposed to be Jerbiton and Guernicus? Or Veriditus (who see wealthy city-dwellers as customers)? Or Mercere (with their communication and trade networks, plus networks of safe-houses and hopitality-related traditions) who see an opportunity to benefit by embracing the messenger/ traveler/ mercantile aspects of Mercury?

Ups. Mistyped. Jerbiton and Verditius. Although Mercere definitely also could profit from the Renaissance achievements. Thanks for pointing that out. I am seriously multitasking.

Maybe the information is there but I could not locate it on the backerkit page but who is your resident Ars Magica Guru for the Ars pamphlet?

W

Hi William.

Not so sure, what you mean with a guru in this case.

I, Melina Sedó, am the main author and Andreas Wichter is my co-author. We are no gurus, but we have played and storytold Ars Magica since the early 90s.

Andreas led the first Ars Magica campaign in Germany because he had met Jonathan, Marc and also John at Gen Con. (Where he also played in the first ever Vampire adventure before it even came out.) Andreas then translated the second edition of Ars Magica.
I came in a bit later (in '92) and translated the fourth edition.

We led a long-running campaign together and have written articles for a German magazine. Because we are German and because were not writing on the internet about rpgs before we started working with Vortex Verlag, you will not know us.

The first book we published, was The Straight Way Lost in 2023. It was based on our Ars Magica campaign, but because Ars Magica was not yet on CC, we added rules and stats for DnD5e. (The DnD part was mostly carried by Andreas together with the Vortex owners, because my knowledge of it is limited.)
Serenissima Obscura was also meant to be for DnD and we were already in the thick of it, when ArM went on CC. We rejoiced and decided to add the Ars Magica conversion guide, which John Nephew so graciously supported by recommending it to the fanbase. Yay!

Now you know all about us, but nothing about the gurus. Ok, not all. Ask me more.

PS: Not sure, if pamphlet is the right word. The Ars Magica Guide to Serenissima Obscura will have approximately 100 pages. I am not sure, if I should even call it "booklet" anymore.

Remember that Melina is the one who translated Ars Magica 4th edition into German, so she's already quite qualified with this.

So, I don't think you can lump House ex Miscellanea together on this (and much anything). While the House includes some witches, it also includes traditions for which faith and mundanes are very important, including the Donatores, who are literally part of the church. The Karaites, holy jewish mage who are likely to care about urban areas where jews are present and a couple of others.

Interesting point. I have to look into the newer traditions of EX Miscellanea. In my most active years (92-2007) there we not so many supplements with details about specific traditions * and I really have to catch up on these before we set everything in stone.

  • or at least: we did not use them, but invented our own.

Glad to hear. I think you should just add the Ars Magica guru title to someone listed on your backerlist team. Akin to the dnd 5th ed rule guru title on there already.
Also, maybe add differentiators to avoid confusion of dnd 5th ed vs Ars 5th ed

Good point, but:
We are not allowed to write DnD 5e in our announcements. the DnD license forbids so. (Unless this changed since 2023, I'd have to check)
