The Practicia Covenant (Test run)

I've been loving Metacreator and have been doodling around building covenants up from the ground. I decided to post a new covenant here and simply track it throughout time. I'm using Metacreator but am not going to use Companions for a little while or add Grogs ever. The Specialists are simply there and they will be replaced when they would normally pass away. I'll just keep pushing through about five years at a time with a little content to discuss the story. I'm not using any calculations just adding things in here and there.

Notes: In 1100 AD, the Practicia Covenant was founded by Galatrias ex Flambeau, a
weary Flambeau who fled from the wars in the south. He convinced a sodales to raise a
Mystical Tower, indebting the covenant for 40 pawns to be paid within 20 years. Once
the tower was raised, it was discovered that the iron mines hedged up against a nearby
Unseelie Court led by Goblin King. To make matters more interesting, Galatrias
reputation as a crusader against the Moors attracted the attention of a nearby monastery
that held the rights of the land. The Church and Galatrias came to an agreement on an
appropriate tithe and a vague promise of aid in the future. Galatrias spent a considerable
amount of resources gathering the stocks needed to attract other magi. His old friend,
Willace ex Jerbiton, happily joined his sodales and brought with him a stonemason and
scribe. Another maga, Elucia ex Bonisagus, eager to establish herself joined the
covenant a year past her Gauntlet and brought several texts. So it was that the covenant
of Practicia began:

Synopsis 1100AD-1106AD

1100 AD
Practicia Covenant is formed in the southern foothills of the Pyrenees. Founded by Galatrias ex Flambeau, Willace ex Jerbiton, and Elucia ex Bonisagus, the covenant was formed to be a bulwark of learning for the eventual struggle for the peninsula. The first year consists of setting up labs and getting to know neighbors for Galatrias and Willace. Elucia sets up her lab and extracts vis for the Aegis. Galatrias manages to learn Aegis in time for the Winter Council meeting.

1101 AD
Galatrias spends some time on his Herbam studies and two seasons extracting Vim vis for the Aegis. Willace decides to learn more about the region, practicing the language and then traveling again. He spends the winter season studying the language. Elucia studies Magical Theory for most of the year and extracts vis in the winter, providing two to the covenant and keeping one for herself. The Council decides to pay off five pawns of their debt of Technique vis.

1102 AD
Galatrias decides to spend some time mastering Aegis since he almost ruined the Winter casting in 1101. He also requests and is approved to study Vim vis provided he spends a season extracting for the stores. Willace continues with his studies of the language and then spends Autumn working amongst the different mundane communities. In Winter, he decides to study up on Iberian Hermetic Code rulings to see just how far he can push things. Elucia spends the first half of the year studying Magical Theory from the library. In Autumn, she decides to refine her laboratory with the permission of the others. In the winter, she extracts vis again, this time she keeps most of it for her own studies. The covenant agrees to pay 2 pawns on their debt. They also decide that each Magus should provide copies of known spells to the Library within five years.

1103 AD
Galatrias goes south to assist an old friend. He ends up purchasing horses for the trip and takes several grogs with him. He returns in the summer and studies his Parma Magica. In Winter, he extracts vis and provides some to the covenant. Willace became fluent in Catalan and then spent the remainder of the year learning more about Herbam. Elucia extracted vis for her own studies and then spent the remainder of the year studying the Vim vis that she possessed. They pay 1p of Creo to the debt and discuss getting a new Technique vis source. Willace indicates that he is willing to do it and will spend some time next year on such a resource.

1104 AD
Galatrias spends more time practicing the Aegis and then studies Vim in the summer. Willace prepared for his excursion by mastering the Call to Slumber. In the summer, he went out with five grogs and met with disaster. After several weeks, he and the grogs had managed to kill a poisonous worm and netted some Perdo vis. In tracking down rumors of a moonlit pool, they were ambushed by ruthless brigands in the employ of a Moorish sorcerer from the south. Three grogs lost their lives and Willace was seriously wounded. They made it back to the covenant and Willace spent August recuperating and taking it easy. An emergency Council ends with everyone agreeing that their defenses need to be more effective. Galatrias agrees to spend winter recruiting new grogs, a turb captain and an armorer. Elucia spent the first half extracting vis and preparing a golden ring for enchantment as her talisman. Willace’s injuries concern her and she decides to add her spells to the library in order to augment everyone’s repertoire. In the winter, spurred on by Galatrias’ warning that the covenant was still young and in danger, she extracted vis for the year’s Aegis. Willace spent the winter learning more about his Parma Magica figuring it to be his best weapon against his enemies.

1105 AD
Galatrias finished penning his lab texts into the Library. He decided to extract Vim vis for his own use, providing a pawn to the Covenant. Willace’s experience made it clear that there would need to be some work on defensive magics and enchantments and he had a blasting staff in mind. At the request of the others, he penned a quick Tractatus on the use of the Parma in mundane combat situations. Willace spent more time learning about his Parma Magica. He was reminded to add his spell repertoire to the library and, in doing so, divined an idea for enchanted robes. Putting that idea on the backburner, Willace realized that a longevity potion was needed for he was in his 36th year. Therefore, he spent Autumn and Winter working on his Magical Theory. The entire Council realizing the covenfolk were upset about the deaths of the grogs and decide to host some festivities in the next year to raise spirits.

1106 AD
Galatrias spent Spring and Summer extracting vis in order to create a wand that would be useful in combat. He decided that the level of power required some more research into the theory behind it. In exchange for eight pawns of Vim, Elucia was granted 5 pawns of Ignem to study for the purpose of defensive and offensive magics. She spent the winter mastering the Crystal Dart for the same purpose. Willace was determined to be prepared for his next adventure and extracted vis for an enchantment idea. He used lab texts to pick up some more useful spells. A bout of the flu in the winter reminded him that a longevity potion was needed very soon. They decide to provide 8 pawns of Perdo to the debt in order to forestall any grumbling from their supporters.

Heh, good question!

For this native speaker*, "I have been loving X" is indeed an atypical construction and does sound a bit odd when you stop and think about it, but not at all unheard of in a poetic sense/etc. (i.e. It's something (expressive) people say but don't stop to think about.) For me, it emphasizes the act, the intensity (and novelty?) of the experience itself, even if it is not happening at this instant.

(* and student of English, English Lit, Linguistics, 2nd Language Acquisition, Old English (aka Old Anguish), etc etc. blah blah)

Without the past-progressive aspect, "I am loving X" works the same and is very common - to emphasize the process. (sim to "I write a book" vs. "I am writing a book", etc.)

The more common past-perfect-progressive implies a previous continuing state that is now ended. ("I had been loving X... but now I don't.")

The present-perfect-progressive tends to emphasize/imply a contrast between the current generally-ongoing action vs. a previous state lacking that action (tho' that's not a hard and fast rule - no Academie d'Anglaise).

So:
"We have been running" (where before this we were not)*
or
"You have been dating her" (while before, you were not dating)*

(* Note that in neither does it imply that running/dating is happening right now - as could be the case if you said "I am running//dating". The simple progressive also does not emphasize a history of an ongoing state.)

So, "I have been loving X" implies either that 1) earlier, I was not loving anything ( or not comparatively so: not as much, as noticeably, as intensely) or 2) earlier, I was not loving "X" (whatever "X" is) - BUT now I am, and have been for a while. It's the experience of "loving" that is emphasized, either way.

There's no progressive in French afaik. Best I can think of is "Je suis en train d'aimer" or "J'aime continuellement" but nothing comes close to "I've been loving".

Definitely. I've noticed that I have to keep that in mind as I run them a bit too much like a team. At the moment, I think it works okay because I assume they're all committed to making the Covenant work. But, as I've progressed it to 1120 by now (just haven't documented it all here) I'm seeing some distinct personalities appear and I learned to look at their Flaws and such. But it's still hard for me to try and keep them moving on their own separate tracks as opposed to working in conjunction with each other. A goal for each magi should help also.

The other problem I've run into is magic items... all of them have started or planned enchantments but something came up or I forgot to go back and enchant it. The reason being, I figure, is because the enchantments are never going to be used they don't stick out. Or the lack of them, I should say, isn't noticeable. Enchantments are designed and made usually to fit a need that arises during a story and so I don't really have that... other than my obvious "Wand 'o' Fire-Tossing."

PRACTICIA COVENANT
WINTER, 1110 AD

1106 AD
Galatrias spent Spring and Summer extracting vis in order to create a wand that would be useful in combat. He decided that the level of power required some more research into the theory behind it. In exchange for eight pawns of Vim, Elucia was granted 5 pawns of Ignem to study for the purpose of defensive and offensive magics. She spent the winter mastering the Crystal Dart for the same purpose. Willace was determined to be prepared for his next adventure and extracted vis for an enchantment idea. He used lab texts to pick up some more useful spells. A bout of the flu in the winter reminded him that a longevity potion was needed very soon. They decide to provide 8 pawns of Perdo to the debt in order to forestall any grumbling from their supporters.

1107 AD
Galatrias agrees to assist Willace with his longevity ritual in the Fall. In Spring and Summer, Willace reads some more Magical Theory. Galatrias researches his enchantment idea and determines that it will take almost a year of work. Willace agrees to assist him with the work to shorten this in exchange for the assistance on the longevity ritual. He prepares the Wand of Enduring Flames in Spring. In the Summer, he uses two pawns of Ignem from the Covenant for studying. In the Fall, the two of them prepare Willace’s Longevity Ritual. Elucia travels to Italy for training in Philosophiae. This takes most of the year for her. They pay one Creo pawn towards their debt.

1108 AD
Galatrias and Willace finish the Wand of Enduring Flames. In the Summer, Galatrias invents Improved Sap The Griffin’s Strength, a more powerful effect than his other one. Willace extracts vis in Summer and Fall for his own enchantment idea. In the Winter, he is forced to deal with a local succession crisis. This helps to bolster their relations with the locals though. Galatrias extracted some more vis for the Covenant. In the Spring and Summer, Elucia works on her Magical Theory through the Library. Applying some of her newfound knowledge, she decides to write a Tractatus, “Permutations of Arcane Effects.” At the Council, they decide, to her displeasure, that Elucia will travel to the Tribunal. She will be bearing much vis for trade with Corpus, elements (Auram, Aquam) and Rego preferred. She will also be looking for books for trade as well as a copy of her latest book for dissemination.

1109 AD
Willace spent Spring and Summer working on his Vim through the study of vis. In the fall, he went out on a sortie with the grogs and ambushed a band of brigands. The victory eased more of the ill-feeling amongst the covenfolk over the earlier debacle he had led with the grogs. In the Winter, he extracted more vis for the Covenant and himself. Elucia spent Spring making a copy of her Tractatus. In the Summer, she traveled to the Tribunal and provided her book. This provided her with some Acclaim amongst the other Bonisagi. She also traded vis for 10 Corpus and 2 Aquam. The most interesting development was being approached by an older Tytalus. His apprentice was reaching Gauntlet and he sought out Elucia to prepare a spot for him. He wanted a Spring covenant beset by trouble to test his fili and they agreed that he could come to the covenant when he passed his Gauntlet. In return, the parens would provide his fili with a book on Mentem magics since it was a specialty of his for the service. The new magus would, of course, need to pass the probation period. She traded Galastrias “Reflexive Shielding” for another vanity work, on Imaginem. Irritated by his slow copying, Galastrias spent Summer, Fall and Winter working on his scribing abilities. Elucia returned and used the Fall and Winter to learn Catalan from the Library since it would help her with dealing with the grogs. The entire trip was very unpleasant with little conversation. For her travels to the Tribunal, the Council agreed that Elucia would be allowed several years to work on her projects. This was agreed to provided that she pen her knowledge to the Library before sending it off to the Bonisagus auditors. In addition, Galatrias agreed to assist with her Longevity ritual but she indicated that she did not need his help.

1110 AD
Elucia worked on her Longevity Ritual in the Spring and spent the Summer reading up on Intellego. She spent the remainder of the year, with the Council’s blessing, working on Muto with the aid of Covenant vis. Galatrias spent Spring, Summer and Fall extracting vis for his studies. He graciously donated the vis needed for the ritual that year. In the Winter, he studied the vis and planned on continuing into the next year. Willace spent Spring meditating on his experiences and applying it to his skills. He also caught up on local events in the area. In the Summer, he prepared his idea for magical robes. In the Fall and Winter, he invested the “Doublet of Impenetrable Silk” as a constant effect into the Robes. The Council decreed that 10 pawns of Muto should go towards their debt.

1111 AD
Disaster struck in the Spring. Willace and Galatrias, mindful of their promise, raced from one end of the area to the other dealing with raiders. They and the grogs fought well and survived with only minimal casualties. Again, the successful actions reduced the pain of losing their first battle half a decade ago. Galatrias and Willace gained experience in combat in those days. In the Summer, Galatrias and Willace took the fight to the raiders and wiped out their encampment to the south. In the Fall, when the fighting died down, Willace decided to study some of the Covenant’s Imaginem vis. Galatrias worked on spells for the remainder of the year and invented some spells for use in healing and scouting. Elucia spent the entire year oblivious of outside events. Have you considered setting up a web page with this data? I'm interested in looking at what you've done, but without formatting of the data into tables or such, I find that I come, start to peak, and then find it's too cumbersome.

Don't consider this too much of a poke... it's your free time, and if you'd rather spend it thinking about the characters than HTML, I can hardly blame you. :slight_smile:

I'm a developer who occasionally does web development, so if left to my own devices, this sort of project would have a data store, multiple views, customizable queries, etc, etc... so a quick answer like that stops me before I start thinking. :wink:

I agree that it's a bit cumbersome to look at but, as you mentioned, it's easier that way. That's one of the reasons I added the primer ahead of time so you could see the actual actions and developments without the BIG-BLOCK-O-TEXT. I agree, it looks like junk. But if someone wants to put it somewhere else, have at it. The next bunch is kinda screwy because it's almost ten years... I kinda got on a roll. And I was drinking. I blame the beer. I'll try to get it up soon.

The interesting thing, which I decided to not do here, was adding another covenant or two. Since we have scribal hospitality, it would make things pretty interesting in terms of development and advancement.

Heck, if you want to put time into it... you get creative control, tell me where these magi should go and what not :smiley:

ndkid's project about this project sounds great!

Magical items for the lab/covenant:

  • magical light
  • magical heating
  • magical creation of specimen (plants/bodies etc)
  • magic glass cleaning devices
  • a magic mirror that has sight of the active magics
  • a pair of vis scales
  • a broom that cleans by itself
  • magical traps that kill intruders
  • a magic bunsen burner

  • weightless armor for the grogs
  • charged item to down a parma (see cutellus from MoH)
  • healing bed (recovery bonus based on level 25 spell, so it doesn't warp!)
  • unseen porter gloves

Covenants has rules on how these things can either help save covenant upkeep or improve lab quality. Money saved on covenant upkeep can be poored into the lab.

Use 21st century technology. If we use it, it must have some use.

e.g. magic cellphone, magic chainsaw (axe?), magic refrigerator, magic copy machine, magic music box that can only be heard by teenies
